making people self reliant in the art and science of beekeeping and apiculture
Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
It is where I spent 5 years for my undergraduate studies and have carried out studies and researches in the area.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
The inhabitants are peasant farmers that do practice traditional beekeeping and local businesses. They grow arable crops such as sorghum, millet and rice and process them into local foods. The climate of Sokoto is tropical with moderate rainfall. The major ethnic group of the area is Hausa with a powerful emir known as Sultan of Sokoto.
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
The environment in Sokoto is so severe that it couldn't fully support crop production but can favour beekeeping. The economy of the people in the area is so low that they can't opt for high expensive agricultural technologies but beekeeping demands local technologies
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
Our vision is to conduct a sensitization program to the inhabitants on the importance of modern beekeeping, conduct capacity building on modern beekeeping to the prospective beneficiaries, supply of beekeeping equipment using indigenous materials and technologies and finally follow up the program with monitoring and evaluation.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
If the vision is properly implemented the people of the area will have a better standard of living, decent work, quality education as well as a conducive environment for living.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
Local bee hive under attractant application
Beekeeping require plantation of trees and flowers which is a very good idea of conserving natural environment and beneficial living things. High supply of honey for consumption will supplement and substitute sugar in our diets that is highly medicinal. The high demand for honey will create huge income to the beekeepers thereby providing them with better economy. Traditional beekeeping is already a culture in the vision location, therefore engaging them into modern beekeeping will improve their culture. Beekeeping is not without its special technologies for its success. Equipment such as hives and suites can be make using cheap available local; materials thereby improving the local technology of the area. Beekeeping will help people in abiding by forestry and environmental policies such as poaching and deforestation.
