We’ve been cooperating with Chinese partners in different fields of economics during the last 13 years. The development of China cannot but impress.
Our project Avocado Box is a project of Crown Food Group Ltd. The company has been working as a food distributor, importer, and manufacturer on Asia Market (Hong Kong and China).
The demand for food is growing every year in China. But the land is becoming inefficient. Farmers try to protect the harvest by using more chemicals and be competitive in the growing market. The more food became full of calories but with a lack of nutrients.
As a by-product of urbanization and an increasingly affluent lifestyle, the pattern of how consumers buy foodstuffs has changed dramatically. Additionally, as consumers have grown more affluent, the demand for goods brought in from distant reaches of China and overseas has also grown; each of which increases the likelihood of spoilage, and thus increasing the embedded cost of waste into the system.
New eating habits of more high-calorie and unhealthy foods have led to significant health problems such as obesity, diabetes, dermatitis, heart disease, and others
The government is getting more involved, requiring manufacturers to provide additional labeling information. In 2020, the government has required that labels on foods show their glycemic index, a rating of how the carbohydrates impact blood glucose levels. The government is acting in an attempt to impact the explosion in diabetes and obesity across China.
We see the possibility of Avocado Box to support health through the monitoring and sustainable food nutrition and to inspire food producers and farmers to find new ways to support and develop a better food system.

The current share of China population to the world population is 18,47%. After the rapid population growth in the middle of the 20th century, the Chinese government sought to limit population growth by introducing the famous "one-child policy." As a result, experts were concerned that China’s low birth rate, combined with its aging population, will damage its future. The policy was ended by the Chinese government in 2016.
The population is predicted to grow at increasingly slower rates until 2030, at which point the population should actually begin to decrease but not significantly.
As a whole, China has an estimated population density of 153 people per square kilometer. This rank 81st, despite the country itself, is one of the largest in terms of size and the largest in terms of population. The density figures change dramatically when you look at the largest urban areas, however.
Currently, 59.7 % of the population of China is urban (856,409,297 people in 2019).
As China continues to industrialize, vast swaths of agricultural land are being converted into industrial land. Farmers displaced by such urban expansion often become migrant labor for factories.
China's limited space for farming has been a problem throughout its history, leading to a chronic food shortage.
Although China's agricultural output is one the largest in the world, only 12.6% of its total land area can be cultivated. About 75% of China's cultivated area is used for food crops. The black soil in northeast China is considered one of the most fertile soils in China. Consequently, the black soil region has become one of the most important regions for cereal grain production in China.
While most years China's agricultural production is sufficient to feed the country, in down years China imports grain, and food due to the shortage of available farmland and population growth.
China is classified as an upper-middle-income country by the World Bank, and its rapid growth over the decades has pulled hundreds of millions of its citizens out of poverty. About 10% of the population in the country lives on $1 USD a day, compared to 64% just 35 years ago.
The family is still the pillar of Chinese culture. The family is regarded as the most important part of an individual's life. While modern Chinese families have abandoned many old practices, the importance attributed to family remains strong.
Even though times and attitudes are changing, some of the practices are so deep-rooted within the culture that it is almost impossible to erase them completely. Where independence is encouraged early on in a child's life in the West, in China interdependence is taught, practiced and encouraged.
China has a vast territory and abundant resources, and each region has a different climate, natural products, and folk customs. After a long time, the different region has formed its own food flavors. The whole country can be generally divided into four parts: sweet south, salt north, sour east, and spicy west.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
One of the main challenges for China is to feed the growing population with healthy nutritious food.
China accommodates 20% of the world’s population but only 7% of its arable land and as a by-product of this inefficient system, farmers often adopt highly intensive cultivation and pesticide practices that continuously affect the fertility of the available land, which in turn, reduces agricultural productivity.
The health challenge is very serious for China due to serious environmental problems as well not just to food consumption.
The regions in China are not homogenous: the rural population still has a low income and low caloric intake compared with urban where there are high caloric intake and rising weight. China has health problems malnutrition, communicable diseases obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes.
According to some estimates, some 429 million - are overweight or obese, prime candidates for heart disease and diabetes. And this growing affects with grave implications for the workforce and economic growth in the world's second-biggest economy.
Most Chinese don't get enough minerals. Iron deficiency is a problem. One in five Chinese suffers from anemia. Many also have calcium deficiencies. About 40 percent of Chinese children below seven have a zinc deficiency.
Nearly 20 percent of Chinese adults now suffer from hypertension, a condition associated with a low-nutrition, high-salt diet that significantly increases the likelihood of stroke, heart disease, and other sequelae. The incidence of cancer is rising at around 30 percent per decade, and more than 92 million diabetics.
Another challenge is to feed people if any crisis will come.
China faces a huge shortage of pork last year after losing about half of its hog herd to African swine fever over the past 15 months. China’s pork production has plummeted an estimated 45%, while the price of pork soared.
Chinese last year consumed almost half of the total global supply of meat. Pork has accounted for more than 60% of Chinese meat consumption, with citizens eating an average of about 40 kg each per year.
As China’s economy has shifted from the world’s factory to a consumer-led economy, cities have struggled to find ways to safely and economically manage the various consumer wastes that are produced daily.
Chinese consumers wasted roughly 17 to 18 million tons of food served in big cities, a quantity sufficient to feed 30 to 50 million people annually.
With the average farm in China being 660m – 2000m in size, a significant portion of food waste is driven by the highly fragmented nature of how China’s food growth. With such small plots, increases in productivity are difficult to achieve.
Farmers and consumers in effect pay for the waste as middlemen, processors, brands, and retailers are able to protect their margins more effectively. For every unit of food wasted, China’s precious water resources are wasted while at the same time polluted by unnecessary chemical applications.

To help the problems of a polluted environment, we see our assistance in the optimization and reduction of food waste. Thanks to our analytical programs, we are able to predict ahead how many organic products will be needed to meet the demand. Trough cooperating with farmers we’ll place orders taking into account the forecast, giving them the opportunity to grow products that will be purchased and not go deteriorate during long-term storage and unknown demand. The optimization of food production will save the water that spends on the production of food waste products as well.
We’ll optimize the movements of products, keep their freshness and quality by delivering products through centralized distribution warehouses and thereby exhaust food waste and emissions as well.
To solve diet challenges, we’ll create special Avocado Box programs - a set of special food, supplements, and drinks for balanced nutrition to solve various health issues. Each month, our customers will receive sets of food products for preparing healthy food, thanks to which they can improve their health indicators.
We will also carry out through the Avocado Box App an active work to educate people about healthy balanced nutrition, monitor their health.
We see the enhancement of economics problems by working with our partners - producers, and farmers. The cooperation on the implementation of production under customers demand optimization and waste minimization, as well as competitive product prices, without overhead costs for retail chains will allow our partners to accumulate profits for the development of sustainable production and organic agriculture, investments in the development and cleaning of land from chemicals.
We will also provide an opportunity for our customers to significantly save time for sourcing healthy food and the money for not just food but the health treatment as well.
Educational work on sustainable nutrition, the dangers of food waste and its optimization it's the support of our culture vision: tips for improving the quality of life through nutrition, advice from specialists in nutritional sciences, sports trainers, etc.
Thanks to new technologies that we adapted to our Avocado Box project we able to analyze prices for products in different regions and countries, fluctuations in the main raw materials and crops, make forecasts on the increase in demand for certain products, taste preferences and shape future food trends.
We’ll implement logistics optimization and analytics programs to optimize wastes and have enough stock to respond to our demand: predict freshness, improve supply chain management and warehouse operations, apply advanced analytics.
To address the challenges of policy, we will systematically work with producers and farmers in different fields by supporting the common aspirations for the development of sustainable nutrition through working with public and industry organizations to participate in solving challenges of local and national scale.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
Environment: Farmers would be willing to plant more diverse crops to provide increased demand for organic products for Avocado Box customers. They will optimize the diversity of products, their amount in seasons and regions, minimized food waste and other natural sources spend on food production. The producers get more profit to invest in healthy ingredients and support the clean and fertility of the soil. It will get the opportunity to present the national products as organic worldwide.
Diets: Avocado Box programs will provide healthy nutrition for customers to support their health: help decrease sugar level in the blood, support the health of heart, lung, liver, and kidney. Customers choose the program that better suits their needs: to support the health of joints and vessels, to help lose weight or be active through sports activity, etc. They will get helpful advice on the correction of their food habits and health goals.
Economics: The food producers and farmers will see the positive results in cooperation and the possibility to build a long prosperous relationship for all sides. Each partner will make a worthy income to develop their business, create new jobs and support the local economy and community.
Culture: Avocado Box will make promotional and educational work through web, App and offline events with partners; it will provide nutrition knowledge of what products and how to cook right, which ingredients are better to use and on what time.
Technology: Digital technologies have been revolutionizing many sectors in China, and there is a great opportunity to address consumers’ awareness, facilitate behavioral change and increase compliance with responsible food consumption, recycling, logistics and collection programs through the use of mobile technology platforms.

By 2050, our vision has significantly influenced the food system in China and created fertile ground for the health of the next generation.
Environment: Owing to constant systems-focused approach cooperation with farmers and producers Avocado Box will help reach stable development of sustainable nutrition, optimization of food production and logistics.
Many environmentally beneficial crops are gaining in popularity and it will give opportunity farmers significantly increase the fertility of the land and nutritious of foods. Stable and common work with partners on forecasting demand is helping to reduce water consumption for production and growing food, significantly minimize food waste.
Diets: Healthy eating is not just becoming popular, but is being supported by a wider population of China. The constant monitoring Avocado Box App is helping support and improving health. Thanks to positive changes in people's health, the offer of Avocado Box programs is expanding for different needs of people. By creating with nutritionists, gastroenterologists, sports trainers Avocado Box is achieving new forms and trends of nutrition that are widely applicable in the world inspiring by the best practices of Chinese medicine and Chinese eco-healthy products.
