Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

The founders of were born and raised in Pittsburgh and they have experienced the issues of sustainability and food deserts that have plagued the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh for decades.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Pittsburgh is a diverse city with a range of foods from different cultures. Pittsburgh, however, is also in a food desert. The definition of a food desert is an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. There are many negative affects of living in a food desert that have plagued the population of Pittsburgh for decades.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?


Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The main two challenges that the Pittsburgh food system is facing is access to fresh local food and the sustainability of the food system. Without any action the food system will face these same issues in the future.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Our vision will address the challenges in our food system by making it easier to operate greenhouses which then will increase the number of greenhouses in Pittsburgh which will help with the issue of access to fresh food.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Having fresh and healthy food accessible to the residents of Pittsburgh will not only improve the general health level but it will also improve productivity levels. Studies have also shown that access to healthy foods will also add better jobs and help revitalize the local economy. This could also help tackle the issue of childhood obesity which is especially prevalent in low income neighborhoods with limited access to fresh and healthy foods.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Our vision and technology will impact the diets of the people of Pittsburgh, boost the economy, and bring issues of food deserts and sustainability to the forefront of policymakers.
