Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Nigeria

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Offa Community, a rural settlement in Oyo state, covering a span of 10,000 acres of virgin land.

What country is your selected Place located in?

Nigeria

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Offa community is a rural settlement in the close neighborhood of Ibadan, which is my city of residence. Ibadan is the largest city in Nigeria and a major commercial hub, connecting the Northern Nigeria to the main commercial hub of Nigeria, which is Lagos State.

Finally, Offa is a close neighbor to Iwo, my mum's city of birth, hence my emotional attachment because of the dual role of Father and Mother that my mu has played in my life, and my undying love for her. She was a major influence our securing the permission of Offa indigenes to set up on their soil.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Offa community, being a close neighbor to hugely commercial city ensures that logistics problem is partly catered to in distribution of produce.

The residents are very few and welcoming, it has provided settlement to more than ten minority tribes in Nigeria because of the homeliness and relative peacefulness of the people.

Offa is a predominantly Agricultural community consisting of mostly peasant farmers. The main occupation of the residents of the community is farming. Some of the crops grown are tomatoes, rice, cotton etc. Many of them are also livestock farmers, engaging mainly in poultry and fish farming.

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

40

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

40000

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The pricing of food is immensely expensive, despite that fact that these community and the neighbors are committed farmers predominantly. The major problems are identified below.

For starters, the local farmers' output is inadequate to feed the community, whereas most of the farm produce are sold out in exchange for cash so as to meet other needs beyond feeding.

Also, most of the farm produce are in the raw state and not suitable for consumption. Unfortunately, there is no industrial presence in the community or its environs, hence the need to relocate most of the farm produce away from the community.

There is also the problem of knowledge. Many of their farming endeavors are under yielding because of the lack of information on better Agricultural practices, and also the impetus to engage such practices even if the knowledge is available.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

The AgroInvolve Project seeks to encourage many people from all works of life take up small projects across the Agriculture value chain, which involves Farming, Mechanization, Logistics, Processing, Marketing e.t.c. Have different people do all of these under supervision will ensure that the weight is not on any particular individual as the responsibilities are shared, encourages knowledge sharing and also give a push effect to each individual's endeavor.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The Offa community will become a major Agriculture hub, providing a beehive of Agricultural value chain activities and heavily industrialized.

Many of the indigent residents will draw value from providing services and products to numerous daily visitors to the community.

Health centers will spring up to cater to the visitors and the indigenous people will be the primary beneficiaries. The value of their lands will improve as demand for residential properties will increase.

More importantly, the food production in the region will increase and there will be enough not only to service the neighbouring regions, but also the local community.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Wao! Have you commenced work at OFFA? Will love to partner with your company to bring about the desired change in OFFA. I live in Oluponna and have been opportune to visit a farm within the community several times. In fact my idea of creating new farm communities was reenforced as a result of my observation of the area and its untapped potentials.
