Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Nairobi

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Kenya

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Dagoretti a sub-county in Nairobi county, covers an area of 29.1km2.

What country is your selected Place located in?

Kenya

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Our offices have been located within the larger Dagoretti sub-county for the last 10 years, as such we are part of the community and understand the day to day livelihood struggles of the local community. The population of Dagoretti has grown 20 therefore put a strain on access of resources and resources allocation rendering many people vulnerable to food insecurity, malnutrition and job insecurity. Youth between the ages of 18-35 years who form more than 35% of the population are particularly affected.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Dagoretti sub-county is an area located in the western part of Nairobi in Kenya. Administratively it is one of seventeen sub-counties of Nairobi. The Dagoretti sub-county is divided into five wards and has a total land area of 29.1km2 with a population density of 14,908 persons per square kilometer. The main sources of income in Dagoretti is derived from the informal and formal sector. The different activities available include construction and industrial labour, domestic work, small scale grocery trading and skilled trade persons (carpentry, masonry and tailoring). The middle class population living within the sub-county work in nearby schools, hospitals and other government institutions. Some local residents in the wards have vegetable gardens, keep poultry and rear within the urban setting of Nairobi city.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

434208

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Rapid population growth and urbanization is putting pressure on the natural resources in Dagoretti by shifting the ratio of food producers to food consumers. Food insecurity, malnutrition, and high infant and child mortality are some of the issues caused by the strained food systems. The population is projected to continue growing at a rate of about 3% every 10 years which will result to a population density of close to 20,000 persons per square kilometer by 2050. The available mini-gardens in urban/peri-urban areas will become smaller due to housing pressure. High rates of joblessness is another major challenge affecting the youth resulting in crime, homelessness and poverty.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Working with the youth of ages 18-35 years to engage in high value food crops and livestock farming will provide them with an opportunity to attract meaningful employment and improve access to nutritious food within the community in Dagoretti. Horticulture crops and poultry have quicker turnaround times, which will be appealing to the youth as there are higher chances of quick capital turnaround in these two value chains. Introduction of human centric digital transformations coupled with training, extension education platforms and modern technologies (such as, hydroponics) that are affordable, accessible and require limited land access will be appealing to the youth. Technology and knowledge transfer with a focus on the production of high value fruits and vegetables using hydroponics and semi-automated poultry units will be encouraged. The youths will then be linked to local markets through forward contracts. Trans-formative finance intervention will be used to support youth groups to open their own spacious trading and auctioning place to sell their farm products.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The population will have access to nutritious food locally produced and therefore relatively affordable. This will therefore improve food and nutrition security resulting in better health for the local residents of Dagoretti. Active participation in agriculture, will enhance the local youths incomes resulting in better purchasing power and higher living standards. The development of local trading and auctioning places will increase the availability of healthy and nutritious foods, promote better hygiene practices and enhance market linkages. The youths will be supported to open shops within the local trading and auctioning places through which they can sell their farm produce.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Agriculture for Young People (A4YP) vision will work with 1,000 agripreneurs in Dagoretti to empower them with the skills to establish modern horticulture, poultry and other livestock units. High value horticulture crops, poultry and small livestock have a quick capital turnaround which will be appealing to the youth. Modern farming technologies, such as hydroponics, greenhouses, drip irrigation and semi-automated poultry units, will be adopted for use in mini-gardens. Mobile and web based digital platforms will be used to deliver training to the youth and real time extension education support. The youths will also be linked to markets through forward contracts and also supported to establish their own local trading and auctioning place to sell their products. Household organic waste will be used as manure for the vegetable gardens and composting. The technologies proposed encourage sustainable use of production resources and the regenerative agriculture approach to waste will increase biodiversity, enrich soils and enhances ecosystem services for the people of Dagoretti.
