60 Years In The Making

Primed for the passion of sewing.

The other night my mom whipped up a dress for me in less than two days. The dress is for a wedding I am walking in. This isn't the first time she's completed a dress in less than 48 hours.

Her life long dream has been to open up a store front and make dresses, curtains, and custom sewn products. You can tell she was really enjoying what she was doing as she realized how much time flew by because she had to step away from the sewing machine and attend to her own mother. She had to give my grandmother (79 years old) her medication, and rotate her on the bed.

I've taken the questions supplied by openIDEO and formed an interview. I've attached an audio as my mom is shy to be on camera.  Click here for the full interview.

What is a provocation or insight that might inspire others during this challenge?

There are many adults over 50 willing and able to do work they enjoy. Often times they do not have the financial means or available resources to make those ideas come to life.

Tell us about your work experience:

I've worked previously at a bank as a teller, and have has a few retail cash handling positions. I am now a designer, working to do packaging and displays.

Keshna Donia Thermitus great interview. It was nice to e-meet you on the OpenIDEO office hours. Here is an idea that you might find interesting in light of the insights from your interview:  What do you think your mother would need most? How could the incubator club support her? I mentioned to Lillian J Warner and her team your interview and they were really excited to have your mother's feedback on their idea.

Keshna Donia Thermitus , this was a great insight and also revealed that there's no age for aspirations. My team and I have actually come up with an idea of an "Incubator Club" (as Anne-Laure Fayard pointed out), where we hope that people over 50 can turn their talent and ideas into a profitable business. We were thinking that your mother would be an excellent source of feedback for our idea and would love her response on it! Do you think we could connect with her to get feedback on our idea?

Hi there! I spoke to my mom and she's willing to provide additional feedback. I also have someone else lined up for another interview. I know we are further along in the challenge but they were out of the country and just returned. My mom will be available mainly in the evenings after 5:30 pm eastern. Let me know if you'd like to link up another way for quicker response.

Thanks Keshna Donia Thermitus  and thanks to your mother. This is great news.  I let Lillian J Warner Aurora Hasan Ahmed Ansari Tanvi Sinha answer regarding the best way to connect. Thanks again!

That is great news! We would love to have a conference call or a meeting with her, at her convenience, sometime this week. We'll decide and let you know by today evening. Thank you again for your help! :)

Keshna, thank you again to you and your mother for taking out time and having the call with us!

Indeed. I'll be interviewing a few other people. And will see if they have any additional feedback related to this idea!

Keshna Donia Thermitus I assume it's too early and too far but I wanted to invite you to  the Idea showcase for this challenge (in the context of my class): Thank you so much for your support!

Wonderful! It's in person. It's only that the OpenIDEO team is based in SF and will therefore join the first hour virtually. See you Tuesday!
