Health & Wealth: Working With the Cycle, Not Against It

An integrated health and wellness application that supports both the fitness and financial goals of those over 50.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it support the dreams and obligations of those 50 and older?

This app is designed for anyone over 50 who either had health complications, or perhaps would like to avoid future illness.

As poor health can contribute to debt, and debt can contribute to poor health, we want to break the cycle and turn it into something advantageous to both goals that effect quality of life. We could help seniors reach health and fitness goals that they determine, either personally or with help from their doctor. As they reach these goals, we could offer rewards or other incentives to help them continue on their path to financial and personal wellness.

Some examples of the reward structure are:

Offer fee waivers at the Credit Union for "turning in a good health report"

Offer gift cards or other cash bonuses for hitting health benchmarks.

Partner with other institutions to offer rewards (such as grocery, airline miles, etc) for meeting benchmarks.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

An analog trial of community members forming and reaching fitness goals could give us a sense of whether the long-term effects of a healthier lifestyle do have a positive financial outcome.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Any UI skills, or background on health challenges that are plaguing those over 50.

This idea emerged from

  • A group brainstorm
  • An OpenIDEO Outpost or Chapter

How would you describe this idea while in an elevator with someone?

Break the cycle. Poor health contributes to financial distress, and financial distress contributes to poor health. Address both at the same time by offering incentives for users to get motivated, earn rewards and impact their financial and physical wellness.

How might your idea be transferable to a large number of people?

We can make this idea transferable by adding a social component. Like challenges on fitbit, users can prompt each other to race them to meet goals, creating a collaborative community and opening dialogue. Sharepoints for social media help spread awareness of the application.

How do you plan to measure the impact of your idea?

Rewards via Credit Unions and Mastercard for achieving goals on the app offer a way to measure user interaction.

What are your immediate next steps after the challenge?

Immediate steps include mapping of UX, followed by surveys of feedback on mapping. Reach out to credit unions to measure interest and capabilities. Possible attempt an analog version of the idea by creating an offline version: possibly creating a open source challenge where users can interact and share their goals and how they plan to put them into action. This is a good way to anticipate what users would like to see in the app.

I love the idea! Ever since my mom, who is over the age of 50, has started working out, I've seen such a huge change in her mood and her life! I would have never expected her to go to the gym five times a week (way more than me), but with enough motivation for anyone it's possible!

Hi Catie, I find really interesting your idea, is a good solution for those people who don't really do exercise, and this encourages them to go out and get fit and healthier! Also is a good way to meet new people.
It's never too late!
I hope to see more updates soon!

Thanks Andrea! I agree, I'm currently brainstorming ways to include non-exercise yet still fitness/health goals for those who don't or aren't able to exercise.

Catie and Ange -
This is a very interesting idea! Just encouraging fitness for Credit Union members might be a first step for those are not actively doing physical activities.
I am not sure how this might fit but organizations like the ones I linked below are bringing people together to exercise outside, for no cost. Bringing people together, creating opportunities for friendships also will impact health, in addition to the physical benefits.
Any thoughts on how partnering with groups such as these might work with your general idea?

Welcome to the Refinement phase Catie! We've added new Refinement questions to your original submission that we'd love for you to answer. Please check out the Refinement Phase Toolkit for instructions on how to answer the new questions and other recommendations we encourage all idea teams to consider in the upcoming weeks.

Lastly, here's a useful tip: When you update the content of your post, it'd be helpful to indicate this in your idea title by adding an extension. For example, you can add the extension " - Update: Experience Maps 12/21" to you idea title. This will be a good way to keep people informed about how your idea is progressing!

Hi Catie!

Happy New Year!

I am wondering if there could be a way to show the users the options and consequences for adopting a healthier lifestyle - a bit like in Swapna Bellare app here - https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/healthy-lives/top-ideas/eat-this-instead-healthy-eating-app. What do you think Andrea Zelenak ? Andrea Zelenak are you Ange Zelenak the team member for this idea?

Hi Catie!

I hope you had a nice holiday.

Would you be able to walk me through a user journey for your idea?

I am also wondering if it would help if the 50+ were asked about what incentives they prefer and what would motivate them to adopt health and wellness advice.

There is an idea submitted in a previous challenge that might be worth looking at:

Community Coin: Distributed Value-Creation and Service Economy, with Reputation as Currency (Updated 6/03) - https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/financial-empowerment-challenge/top-ideas/value-creation-and-service-economy-with-reputation-as-currency

Hi Catie!

Thank you for sharing your idea. Have you thought about considering general 'wellness' for the 50+ customers? What sort of feedback have you had from the 50-65 year-olds?

I am wondering if any of these articles might help you push your idea forward:
