You Have The Power To Prevent A Fall

Evidence based falls prevention programs help adults address their fears of falling in addition to helping build or sustain their strength.

Falling is not a normal part of aging.  Education is the most important step in being ready to prevent a fall.

Evidence based exercise programs can help older adults as to overcome fear and build or sustain strength.

What is a provocation or insight that might inspire others during this challenge?

Fear of falling alone can inhibit one from getting out, which limits physical activity, and adds to one's risk of falling. What campaigns might we design to encourage folk to engage in a falls prevention program? What tools might be designed to facilitate connecting folk to local programs? What environments might host these programs so that the most people can benefit from them?

Bettina Fliegel The video was very insightful. It reminds me of a senior lady at the Weinberg center for balanced living. She is over 70 years of age, and physically active; she is an expert at karate! Many senior centers have free activity classes for seniors aged 60 and above. This helps them remain active and they are less prone to falling.

The NYC Dept for the Aging partners with Senior Centers to provide free services, including exercise programming for wellness. I learned some things about their work from the links below. Apparently the city gets grants which they then use to support services within local communities.
"As an agency of City government and an Area Agency on Aging under the federal Administration on Aging, DFTA receives federal, state and city funds to provide essential services for seniors. It channels these monies to community-based organizations that contract with the Department to provide needed programs locally throughout the five boroughs. Hot meals and activities at senior centers, home-delivered meals, case management, home care, transportation and legal services are among the services these programs provide. DFTA manages the contracts with these programs and ensures service quality.

DFTA also provides services directly through its Senior Employment Services Unit, Elderly Crime Victims Resource Center, Alzheimer's and Caregiver Resource Center, Foster Grandparent Program, Grandparent Resource Center, Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program, and Health Promotion Unit."
