Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

Safe Steps helps safety-concerned elderly people to reduce the chances of falling by providing real time visual, haptic and sound notification for waking patterns anomalies and surrounding hazards, using a pair of slippers and a digital wearable device which are wirelessly connected bringing peace mind regarding fall hazards in domestic spaces.

Main Features

  1. Appealing, Robust and light digital waterproof wearable device.
  2. Comfortable cutting-edge nanosensor slippers.
  3. Wireless support for wearable device and nanosensor slippers.
  4. Real-time visual, haptic and sound notification for walking pattern anomalies.
  5. Real-time visual, haptic and sound notification for risky surfaces and surrounding hazards.
  6. Web Cloud platform to provide powerful data analysis of user walking patterns
  7. Web Cloud platform to record and track user walking events.
  8. Share walking events with medical services.
  9. Customized physical exercises recommendations.
  10. Remote Tracking of wearable device and nanosensor slippers.
  11. Fast wireless charging support.
  12. Emergency contacts management.
  13. Emergency Notification to rapidly reach emergency services and contacts in case of a fall accident.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We did some usability testing for the high fidelity prototype(some screens shown in the images) we created for interaction of the user with the proposed system. We would like to do more intensive usability testing for the system interface and will also like to make use of our feasibility analysis for creating a full product. We have attached our interaction design report for someone who wants to know more about it.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

The OpenIDEO community can give us some support for improving our idea and design, financial support and help in providing awareness about the product within ARPP, caregivers and doctors.

How long has your idea existed?

  • 4 months - 1 year

This idea emerged from

  • A group brainstorm

Tell us about your work experience:

Student Group from University of Technology, Sydney working on Human computer interaction and Human centered design methodologies. We created this idea as a part of our coursework towards HCI.

How would you describe this idea while in an elevator with someone?

Safe Steps helps safety-concerned older adults to reduce the likelihood of falling by providing real time notifications for unusual and uncontrollable waking patterns and detecting risky substances and surfaces, using a pair of slippers with embedded nanosensors and a digital wearable device wirelessly connected bringing peace mind regarding fall hazards in domestic spaces.

How does your idea demonstrate our Criteria of Affordability?

Our plan is to partner with health insurance companies to offer SafeSteps as an added value on top of premium insurance memberships. Another alternative is to partner with government and social impact organizations to fund the research and development to create a final product that can be accessible to everyone.

How does your idea demonstrate or plan to demonstrate scalability?

We plan to create a non-profit foundation with social impact to seek public and private funding, partner with caregivers associations like ARAFMI or Carers Australia to better understand the fall-prevention space. We need to create an strategic alliance with an electronic device's manufacturer to produce at big scale and provide customer support and maintenance.

How do you plan to measure the impact of your idea?

Conduct interviews and observations to major stakeholders, like older people and their families, caregivers, healthcare organizations and professional medicine practitioners. Conduct a systematic literature review of industry solutions and research projects on fall-prevention space to identify the proper metrics to measure the impact and benefits for ours users.

What are your immediate next steps after the challenge?

Create a working prototype of the slippers and wearable device. Run more usability test and gather feedback from a broader segment of users. Redesign the slippers and wearable device interactions to meet any insight found during this iterative creation process.

Hi Ideators

Thank you for all your hard work in this challenge and dedication.

All of the ideas posts are locked but the comments section is still open, so please feel free to look at other ideas and comment on them, seek feedback on your idea etc.

I know I have asked many ideators this question but I am asking again as some ideas pivoting in the challenge. Would you say your idea is Most Viable or Most Promising? How would the incentives associated with that Award (Most Viable/Most Promising) be helpful for you?

Hi Kate,

We consider our idea to be the most viable one, as we think we have done the basic research required in the domain of fall prevention and have a pretty clear understanding of the user space and theirs need, which has helped us to create the idea. Also we feel that our idea has matured a lot since its inception and is ready for prototyping a functional product. We feel that the incentive associated with this award will help us in getting access to advanced prototyping technologies and experts in area of design, electronics etc. Also it will help us focus more on making idea work and help the community as it was the main goal from the on set of this project.

Regards,
