Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

The adults, the community and those with personal relationships with the older adults. I

It's important that older adults be aware, but also empowered and not patronized or nagged by those around them. By producing a checklist that helps individuals and their support people identify assets and liabilities in their environment they can identify specific steps to take to increase their safety and independence. Such a check list could become part of a PSA campaign, showing the checklist on the screen and showing places on line where it can be copied. Churches , individuals and community organizations could then use it to identify areas to focus up. Copies could be made available at Sunday services and the front desks of all senior centers.

The survey might include specific categories to assess, such as strength level, balance skills and environmental challenges or supports. Practitioners could use it with or offer it to their patients to help them make decisions about behaviors or environmental steps they might take.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

A draft of a survey could be developed and through such agencies as Kaiser the content be formulated. Copies of the draft could be left at a few senior centers with a request for feedback and further suggestions.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Open IDEO is the best resource to gather items for such a check list and to offer it to those who might want to test it.

I'm a semi retired writer and school psychologist . I conduct workshops on parenting and have written a book titled, "Parenting? There's not an APP for That." In addition, my empathy was enhanced by a fall while "power walking." The recovery made me very aware of this challenge.

Hi Susan DeMersseman ! This is simple and wonderful. Based on the fantastic feedback below, I'm wondering if you have some thoughts running around about what might be included in the checklist! Maybe it's time for a quick prototype. :)

PS: Which OpenIDEO Chapter are you a part of?
