Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

Our idea is designed to target the future workforce, older adults, and the greater community. The intention is to co-create meaningful engagement in movement and fall prevention while increasing quality of life by: • Overcoming negative stereotypes towards aging in older and younger adults • Preparing a future workforce to understand the design and implementation of relevant programing for different ages, abilities, and anticipated outcomes of participants • Adding capacity to programs

The Center for Active Living and the HealthCircle Clinics are aiming to enhance mutually beneficial interactions between younger and older adults. Oftentimes, perception and stereotypes of aging  exist in both older and younger adults can stymie effective fall prevention programs.  Research shows that older adults are hesitant to enroll in fall prevention classes because it requires them to identify as being "old". In addition to older adults, younger adults entering college tend to shy away from or don't consider  careers working with older adults. Therefore, our aim is to shift perceptions of both older and younger adults through meaningful inter-generational interactions to increase  fall risk awareness and generate sustainable, effective, evidence based fall prevention programs.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

The University supports student, faculty and staff research teams to pilot programs and studies for middle age and older adults focusing on fall prevention. Past research topics include: • Exploring the meaning of exercise as an antidote for older women with depression • Power training and function in middle age females • Self-perception & the effectiveness of the functional movement screen in 20-80 years olds • Can fall prevention exercises be beneficial to a variety of ages and abilities?

This idea emerged from

  • A group brainstorm
