Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

We are helping older adults regain strength and mobility from one safely seated position. As the years pass, muscle strength, joint flexibility and balance decline as the risk of falling grows. When ankles, knees and hips move better, we do too! Ankle function is especially important since the moment feet touch the ground, all mobility and balance begins. Strong, flexible ankles are essential for proprioception (body-brain communication), postural and balance control. MoveMorTM makes it easy.

The two major causes of falls are weak legs and poor balance due to sarcopenia and inactivity. Mobility training is a specialized form of resistance training that strengthens muscles, joints and neural systems through a full range of motion for better balance, body-brain communication, physical function and falls reduction.  MoveMorTM combines the effectiveness of elastic resistance with the power of free movement to gently strengthen hips, knees, ankles and feet from one safely seated position

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We always want to make sure we are helping people and currently have over 3 years of pilot studies with frail adults showing better balance, stronger legs, greater ankle flexibility and potential falls reduction. By continuing to collaborate with older adult communities, we can perform a simple 10-20 minute group exercise session twice a week. We can gauge the benefits to older adults by performing pre- and post-assessments related to mobility and balance.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with innovators to continue to improve our product and exercise programming to best serve the needs of our older adults. We value working together to make a difference.

This sounds like a great idea!
To increase the impact of these classes, I feel classes or programs such as these should be covered by Medicare or funded by the government. This way, classes are more accessible and elders are more likely to pursue these opportunities.

Hi Anya,

Thanks so much for your comment and idea. I wholeheartedly agree with you! I think that to be covered by Medicare/Medicaid we need FDA Class I device certification. Part of that process includes a history of safe use, if I recall correctly. It will be great to reach that point and help strengthen older adults in a class setting who are on Medicare/Medicaid. Thank you for sharing! With Appreciation, Cate
