Helping Hands

Based on principles of occupational safety, the Helping Hands Harness provides around-the-clock support to our frailest elderly in hospitals

Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

The Helping Hands harness is designed for elderly patients in the hospital who have been identified as high-risk for falls. Fall prevention programs in hospitals commonly involve interventions with high presence and high touch of nursing personnel. This can be costly, draining and inefficient as human resources are finite - especially in county hospitals with limited budgets. It can also feel disempowering for the patient who relies on their nurse to perform a basic human function: walking.

In hospitals, patients most commonly fall when they get up from bed without assistance. Though they are told to call their nurse, this frequently does not occur for a variety of reasons including stigma, forgetfulness and delirium from medication. Additionally, elderly tend to slip and fall in the shower - even with the presence of a nurse aid. The Helping Hands Harness is designed to support these patients, enabling them to walk safely with independence and autonomy.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We would purchase a harness used for occupational construction safety, and test it with users to identify needs and further develop features. This early sacrificial concept will be adapted from the Personal Fall Arrest Systems developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which accounts for anchorage, connectors and deceleration devices in addition to the body harness. We would test it with elderly patients in the hospital and at home, nurses and primary caregivers.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Feasibility - How feasible is the railing system? What costs are involved in installation and maintenance? Would the ball bearing work? A useful skill would be in construction and engineering. Desirability - Would patients want to wear this all the time in the hospital? Would they mind? What burden does the harness system place on other non-primary users (e.g. other than elderly patients and their nurses)?
