Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

The device would consist of an airbag which could be conveniently stored in a small pouch (could be carried on back, on hip) An accelerometer would detect a fall and activate the airbag. A high pressure gas container would flood the airbag, creating a soft landing cushion last minute to catch the person.

The invention would aim at reducing the number of injuries sustained by older people living in the community. By making a small unobtrusive device part of someone's daily routine, this airbag could potentially lead to a reduction in fall-related injuries.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

On "healthy" users: Simply purchase one or two inflatable mattress and conduct falling experiments. Move to older users once proof of principle concept has been established. Work on filling mechanism in parallel.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Software: Create an interconnected device with accelerometer that can also alert emerency contact if the airbag has been activated (Like an "onStar" type service)

This is a great idea but how large is the bag while compressed? It is important to estimate the carrying capacity of an elderly person when thinking about items that will be carried/attached.
