Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

Imagine not being able to move freely around your own home for fear of falling? Imagine struggling to put one foot in front of the other? Paadje is worn as a belt and has different sensors that detect when the user is leaning forwards and provides visual cues via interactive projections. Paadje has the potential to help users to build their confidence and regain their enjoyment of walking. And because it is very discreet, and only activated when needed, there is no reason for self-consciousness.

Paadje is a wearable gait assistance for those experiencing mobility issues. The device improves gait by providing interactive visual cues while guiding them on a continuous path. Paadje is an interactive projector mounted on a belt that has built-in accelerometers, gyroscopes and pressure sensors.

Paadje can be used indoors, at home, and at work, but is also portable and can be attached to different surfaces. The device can be used as a wearable or stand-alone interactive tool for gait training and walking exercises. What’s more, the technology is connected to an app that provides feedback to healthcare professionals who can track their patient’s progress and develop their training.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I would like to see Paadje being investigated in a user-centred platform. I would like to see how users experience the device, performing walking and balance tests as well as checking the efficacy of visual cues in providing a sense of safety to the users. Paadje was previously tested with elderly population in a nursing facility and found positive results regarding walking cadence, stride lenght, walking direction and balance. Paadje also found positive results in user's confidence and safety.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

I would like to see Paadje being integrated as part of a holistic falls prevention programme and being part of a collaborative effort including designers, developers, physiotherapists, carers and other healthcare professionals. This would allow Paadje to explore its full potential ensuring that the product is as reliable as possible.

I have been sick with bronchitis and a sinus infection for about 6 to 7 weeks now. I have been to the doctors twice and the emergency room. I have been put on three different antibiotics, prednisone, an albuterol inhaler, and I take herbal health remedies foundation OTC cold medications. I am no longer coughing a lot and have terrible coughing fits. Then I sound like someone with emphysema. I will cough until I throw up but the doctors don't really have any new treatments for me, after trying out herbal health remedies foundation now am better. I am a 59-year-old woman. My Parkinson's disease appeared at the age of 57. My symptoms, at the beginning, were fine tremors and rigidity with joint stiffness. My neurologist prescribed entacapone with levodopa, carbidopa, and pramipexole. I opted not to go on prescription medicines but decided on using herbs instead, October 18, 2017 after being on the herbs you recommended, i had a total recovery from Parkinson’s disease with this natural herbal formula treatment. The tremors, Shaking, Joint Stiffness has subsided. When I stumbled upon you guys, it was just pure instinct. And from that day on it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. The caring that goes into explaining what herbs work for whatever ails me is astounding. In today’s world where so many are after a quick buck, selling without care, Natural Herbal Garden’s staffs amplifies the difference. I’m a believer in karma, and for generations to come, this is a herbal store that will be leaving it’s footprint in this world. Visit NATURAL HERBAL GARDENS official web site www.naturalherbalgardens.com A world of thanks to The Natural Herbal Gardens!”

Hi @Joao Iammoglia

Thank you for all your participation in the challenge and for sharing Paadje with us.

All of the ideas posts are locked but the comments section is still open, so please feel free to look at other ideas and comment on them, seek feedback on your idea etc.

I know I have asked many ideators this question but I am asking again as some ideas pivoting in the challenge. Would you say your idea is Most Viable or Most Promising? How would the incentives associated with that Award (Most Viable/Most Promising) be helpful for you?

Hi João ,
Congratulation for making this far! Have you had the chance to work on this idea, and if so what feedback have you got? Ideas with feedback get better and more credible. I really like this idea, and I thought one easy next step is to have a prototype of the post-cards and maybe an user journey - you can read more about it here https://d3gxp3iknbs7bs.cloudfront.net/attachments/bda1f109-0466-4f8e-9699-1359e406df56.pdf

There are some holistic prevention programs that you might be interested in, such as The 360/365 Caregiver Monitoring Model or Community pharmacist intervention for falls prevention (replaced - see below) .
At this stage, you may find it helpful to review the evaluation criteria too - they include: 1) Health and wellbeing at the center 2)
Affordability 3) Naturally integrate 4) Consider Scale.

Hi João,
Looks like Paadje is ready for the market, or is it? It's a very nice and promising product.

Hi Eldy,
Thanks for contacting. Paadje is a product with potential to be in the market but for this to happen, in depth user research and usability testings needs to take place. I am in contact with healthcare professionals to try to put the idea forward. :)

Hi João,

We are half-way through the refinement phase and I can’t wait to see continued updates on your idea. More information can be found in the refinement toolkit which can be found at the top of the refinement phase page.

An easy first step is to complete the refinement questions which can be found by logging into your OpenIDEO account and selecting the ‘Edit Contribution’ button on the top left hand corner.

If you scroll down to the bottom, you can see the five added questions with a character limit (including spaces) to help you focus your answer. The questions start with "How would you describe this idea while in an elevator with someone? (what's the elevator pitch for this idea?) - 400 character limit"

In addition to answering these questions it would be helpful if you could mention how your solution fits in the market in the ‘full description’ section of your post. Who are your competitors and how is your idea unique?

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me, my email address is krushton@ideo.com

Hope to see you on the refinement call this Friday at 9 am PST.

Hi João lammoglia,

I really like the design of "paadje" and the way you approached to solve the problem.

I am also working on a similar concept and area. Please share your views on

Hi João!

Would you tell me more about the testing you have done? How long did the older adults have the device on for? How did their walking/gait compare before and after use of the device?

How often would older adults use the device? Would it be part of a weekly/biweekly session for fall prevention where older adults use the device as you would in a fitness class? Would it be used every day by some patients who might own the device?

Would you say that this device is 'most viable' or 'most promising'? https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/fall-prevention/ideas

Hi Kate,

The test were performed with 6 older adults experiencing Parkinson's. Each session took aproximately 60 minutes. Different tests were performed: gait innitiation, gait cadence , walking direction and gait continuation. Positive results were achieved specially on gait innitiation and direction. Further tests are necessary for more accurate data collection.

The belt was designed for older adults with Parkinson's experiencing Freezing of Gait (FOG) symptons. The user would wear the belt daily at home as a gait assistant. The device can also be used as a tool for gait training and walking exercises at the "gym" or at home. The device would be used everyday by people with Parkinson's and FOG.

At the moment the device can be considered as most promissing but viability is not far.

Good one Joao .. effective solution for elderly people but seems expensive. It'd be very much helpful if Paadje made affordable for all users
