Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

The idea is designed for older adults. Most older people have a personal risk factor that include weak muscles, poor balance as they walk, the reflexes are slower which make it harder to catch balance if they start to fall. That is why it is necessary to install grab bars securely on the walls especially on the bath room where there is a possibility of water spilling on the floor. This bars will support them to move around and find their way out easily.

The problem am aiming to solve is prevention of falls for elderly that is majorly caused by physical environmental factors. My idea is to have grab bars securely installed on the wash rooms and corridors where the elderly can support themselves as they move. This will support their week muscles.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I will visit the home for the elderly and suggest to them we have the grab bars installed in the bathroom and on the verandas where they can easily slide and fall due to high chances of spilling water. This will be good to support their muscles which are not very strong to stand for long or walk without supporting themselves.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

If the OpenIDEO can support in financing the installation of strong grab bars to the elderly homes it will go a long way in supporting them. This is because most people do not give priority to the elderly including the government so the homes do not have safe physical environment which can be a big contributor to the falls.

Hi Betty Mbithi,

You did a good job accounting for the many problems that elderly people deal with in the bathroom.
I learned a few things from this.
good luck
