Who is your idea designed for and how does it enable older adults to live their best possible life by preventing falls?

My design is meant to provide necessary grip to older adults who need walking aid. People who need walking aid often in fear of falling, that discourages them from physical participation. In some cases that could worsen their medical condition. Proving a better and simple tool that they can understand and use it effortlessly in any circumstances. If we can give them the confidence to move and participate, they can live their life independently again.

•Grab is to be used like a regular cane or walker, the suction mechanism inside will use the weight of the user to provide grip. Simple design and lightweight makes it easy to use in any conditions and location. Maintenance will be cheap and fast.

•Suction is activated when the user uses weight of their hand or body on the handle to support themselves. Suction is released when the user lifts the tool to move forward

•Body is made of aluminum.

•The suction cups under the legs are mechanized to respond to the weight on the handle. As the weight increases the grip also increases.

•The same mechanism can also be used in walkers.

•Body can be customized based on the requirements of the user.

•Simple body makes it cheap to manufacture and affordable to buy.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I would like to make a prototype, test and analyze the usability in different conditions and situations. Make required improvement to design to make it usable in various conditions.

What skills, input, or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

An opinion about the design and any suggested improvements. every patient’s requirements are different; I could use a medium to test my design on various patients who need walking aid, so that I can generalize the design to meet the requirements of wide group of patients.

Hi Sharath!

Thank you for sharing your idea with us.

I am interested to know more about the forces involved especially the effect of the release of the pressure on the suction cups and how easy it would be for older adults to use the walker.
