I define "open innovation" as an ideation, invention and implemention process that is accessible and transparent. It is accessible because anyone can participate in any stage of an innovation project, regardless of location, education, experience or title. It is transparent, because anyone can observe it - projects aren't shrouded in secrecy.

Open innovation is also a platform. It enables an organization to amass large quantities of new and novel ideas. Accessibility enables diverse contributions from a wide array of people, and transparency fosters authenticity. These characteristics position open innovation to amplify benefits inherent to crowdsourcing and gamification strategies as well.

Thanks for the share Jordan! +1 to your insight that "transparency fosters authenticity."

I appreciate that, Shane! Of course authenticity isn't exclusive to open innovation because I believe that in a closed instance where a team is - for example - on secondment to a private project inside an organization, an observant, empathetic designer can ensure authenticity. It's just that I'd argue an innovation platform based on openness increases the likelihood that process participants will share genuine stories and make honest contributions.
