One of the methods I have used to support open innovation, or at least greater internal stakeholder connectivity in light of a lack of resources to stretch this further, is roadmapping.

Starting with global trends, data and market information to connect to offerings, insights, technologies and resources.

The concept of roadmapping is hardly new, though it is typically conducted in a physical space to allow for ideas to written on post-it notes or boards, moved, re-ordered and re-arranged with the aim of understanding the connections and reaching new conclusions.

An open innovation space via the web, based around real time web notes that can be added to or shifted around a virtual roadmapping board would allow for the space between the ideas of collaborators, and the connections that spark through the synapses of creativity, to be explored in a more vibrant and effective way. Open space to allow individuals to post notes on a subject, drawn connection lines and comments between existing ideas and provide background insights to existing ideas would allow unexpected linkages to occur.

The gathering collaborators via social media, VIOP/Webex would allow for the same level of interaction but without the restraints of physical locality that fundamentally limit open innovation potential beyond geographic and therefore typically class/nationality/wealth boundaries.
