Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine the end-of-life experience?

The product line is designed for the the burial of a loved one. It was designed to create a better mourning environment for relatives and all who mourn. inter|section wishes to provide an all-encompassing service to modern individuals and families that would bring committal and commemoration into the twentyfirst century. inter|section would transform the somber, 'Victorian' morbidity of the current funereal practice into a sophisticated, hygienic and compassionate celebration of life.

Inter|section deals with funeral culture of the western world. The project provides an amenities version for funeral services.

Funeral ceremonies have been, up to now, traditionally associated with religion. Today we live in a world in which many people live secular lives, but our relationship to death and burial is often dominated by theistic practices. Many individuals and families opt for religious funerals out of a lack of options that would accommodate their desires and wishes. In addition to this, the Western relationship to death over the past two centuries has a tendency to 'sweep it under the rug', not simply because of the pain of loss but also because of a certain fear of death. inter|section seeks to address our society's relation to death and grieving. The imperative lies in that this is a topic that touches each of us at some point in our lives. When the issue of death falls upon us, there are very few options available via existing undertaking and funeral agencies.

inter|section comprehensives six elements, which can be used at funeral services. The product line aims to offer chapels, funeral halls and churches, which are often ragtag, makeshift equipment, a sophisticated design alternative. Funeral ceremonies are emotional events that everyone perceives subjectively. This work should influence the farewells subtly subconsciously with creative means. Through its formal language, the process of grieving will be supported. The unitary design offers the possibility to create a pleasant atmosphere, even in difficult spatial situations. Through this visually harmonious environment the grief of relatives occupies its rightful space.

inter|section gives a dignified, individualized and high-quality end to life. Anyone who wishes to curate their own funeral, or the funeral of a loved one, and to step away from the outdated and depressing image of death would benefit from this project.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

The a functioning prototype of inter|section was already build and used for some funerals. Even though I got only good feedback from the mourning groups, it would be useful to introduce the elements to more grieving persons to show an alternative to the offer that undertaker sell. It will also be helpful to create more designs for funeral equipments to give a wider range for different taste. The goal is to provide a personal farewell for each of us.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

It would be ideal to get constructive feedback on the design. In addition, it would be great if the OpenIDEO community would collaborate on designs in this field – there need to be more designed alternatives in the future! Possibly, even contacts to manufacturers and undertakers who are interested in incorporating this design into their range might arise.
