Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine the end-of-life experience?

The studio will help people that have started thinking about death to design their Sun Set Party, an event that celebrates life and joy, where they invite people they love, at a place that means a lot to them. Thinking and planning such an event takes a lot of positive thinking and preparation. It shifts the thinking from a very sombre place to an exciting one. From a simple candlelit fireside dinner to a full blown mega concert, your design can fit any budget.

Death is not something people talk about. Sun Set Party design workshops could provide an enjoyable and safe environment for people to share their thoughts, feelings and reframe them positively by designing their Sun Set Party. We will use design thinking methods and tools to inspire and ask the questions, brainstorm and prototype the Party. They will leave the workshop with the structure of their blueprint on which they can continue to work and plan. It would include the people they would like to invite, physically, virtually and in spirit(through holograms, avatars,) the venue, the setting, the music playlist, the food, the drinks, the budget and a video message to welcome the guests and kick off the party.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I am a babyboomer. Most of my friends have retired from their full time jobs. I will prototype a workshop with a good number of them and gather their feedback.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Guidance on managing emotions would be very valuable. People will be working on their memories, reminiscence on places they love, on people that have departed, express the fears connected to end of life, so there is bound to be emotions during the workshop which need to be managed well.

Tell us about your work experience:

I have worked in media, design thinking, entrepreneurship, teaching, training and coaching. I design events and experiences both f2f and virtual.

Hi Julia,

Thanks for sharing (:
Can you explain the studio more? Is this a dedicated space for people to come to or can the studio be any place? Also, check out MyGrief Angels  which is also a party around making connections.
