DeLife-- Death and Life

Death, like everything else on this earth, represents life. Death seeks what life seeks and death signifies what life signifies.

Who is your idea designed for and how does it reimagine the end-of-life experience?

My idea is designed for each and every individual, since each of us die. It aims to ensure that we are remembered by people to whom we are important and also who are important to us. We wish to recreate the unique relationships that we shared with people when we are alive through similar gestures during our death.

In the event of a death, there are two stakeholders which should be a part of our consideration while evaluating the end of life experience- the person who dies and the people associated with the deceased. Till the time of death, every human being wishes to have accomplished something for which people remember them till time immemorial. This thirst for remembrance is inherent in our construct and is found across all cultures and societies. The basic reason behind this tendency, is our primate animal instinct which forms the basis of our fear of death and yearns for immortality. Hence, we spend a large part of our life in the quest of this eternal remembrance and wish to do something remarkable or create a masterpiece, which is remembered for the times to come. This tendency forces us to focus on achievements which the society values and which, primarily, are material in nature. In this process, we tend to forget the importance of small moments and small things, which, actually are the things that matter in life. These are the things which our friends, family and acquaintances remember rather than the material possessions, even after we die. This phenomenon, if captured in the end of life experience can help us re-create the beautiful moments and help us attain transcendence. These moments can be recreated through photographs, memorabilia, journals or personal messages to all the people associated with us. In the end of life experience or in case of a death, if we also include our personal belongings such as our clothes, photographs, souvenirs, journals etc. in our wills and send them to people with whom we share fond memories of these things, it can help us create a lot of happy memories even by our death.

My idea is to create a platform such that, in the event of death or end of life experience, the person can send his personal belongings ( as described above ) to the people who are related to those things. We wish to establish a connection between the deceased person, the person who will receive the things, and the time they spent together through the personal belongings of the deceased person. Through this, the person can ensure the moments that he cherished can be relived by the people involved and hence attain transcendence that the deceased seeks.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Mapping the journey of at least 15-20 individuals through the platform will help us identify the expectations and the scope of the project.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

OpenIDEO community can be a great help for me in the design of the platform and the also with the pilot launch of the platform.
