What problem does your innovation solve?

Nigerian government has made profound progress in recapturing the territories formerly claimed by a terrorist group called Boko Haram. This group has however resorted to hit-and-run approaches that give them no particular territory but make everywhere their target. In each state, every single bomb explosion is met with months of students staying out of school for fear of death, kidnap, or rape. Eventually creating huge disruptions in the education of these youngsters. And that’s a problem.

Explain your innovation.

We aim to employ offline and online virtual techs to remotely link students, in conflict zones, to the classes of skilled teachers that are far away from the climes of the conflict. That is, during the climax of students’ and parents’ concerns for safety, students or parents, through online App or toll-free SMS, can indicate their location, nature of their location, and resources available at their location to a safety manager at Gallantry Sphere. The safety manager advises the callers on their safety and gets back to them on the suitable locations to use as alternative schools. These suitable locations are chosen for their safety, proximity, and available resources. A typical location could be a particular apartment in a compound for all the students in that compound or an open space kitted-up for learning, in cases where the students are dislodged from their homes or roofed accommodations, probably in protracted conflicts.
These young students are taught remotely through videos on the internet or DVD discs [or tapes] and guided to recapitulated each class with peer-to-peer interactions on the videos and the challenges the conflict presents. The classes are actually designed with a revolutionary electronic pedagogy that entertains, inculcates hope and decency, and really teaches the students.
This project was informed by the massacre at Nimbo in April 2016(search Google) and holds both social and business goals for its partners, through them, it would be highly sustained.

Who benefits?

The millions of young students at conflict zones in Enugu, Abia, Benue, Jos, Bornu, Adamawa, and Yobe are the beneficiaries of this project. They are approximately within 3-23yrs old. They are largely dependents in thoughts and philosophies.
What is common across these states is their nonchalant attitudes to girls. Girls are more vulnerable than most during such chaotic crises, from rape to slavery, their lives could be ultimately ruined by a single experience at such times. This project gives special codes to girls in crises and requires the safety manager (explained earlier) to consider their physical and psychological safety as a top priority. The Electronic Pedagogy, as well, takes cognizance of gender requirements and specially directs girls on staying safe, avoiding rape, and maintaining personal health.
Boy or girl, this project would help young students to understand and manage their conflict experiences, and seamlessly progress in their education while they await rescue.

How is your innovation unique?

There is no particular organization that has yet used the combinations indicated above. Conflicts are extremely rowdy scenarios that demand firm leadership for any chance of survival. A few governments, including the Nigerian government, adopted such things as “Emergency Lines,” similar to the “Toll-Free SMS” to our safety manager. These were for separate reasons and have been totally unsuccessful because they were not seriously managed.
Gallantry Sphere however partners with three major telecommunication firms in Nigeria, one international and one local news agency, respective states and the federal government, a private security firm, one research institution, and the Nigerian Police Force to execute this project. And because each of these organizations are incentivized and the private institutions handle both the leadership and evaluations, it is almost impossible for this project to fail.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

How can we ensure the governments and their security agencies efficiently deliver on their own parts?

Tell us more about you.

For this project, our core team is comprised of members from the partners indicated in the UNIQUENESS QUESTION above. Each partner is with an indispensable expertise and strategic resources, which are leveraged to attain a full expertise for this project.

What is the primary type of emergency setting where your innovation would operate?

  • Natural disaster
  • Armed conflict
  • Prolonged displacement

Emergency Setting - Elaborate

This innovative project is suited for hit-and-run [spasmodic] conflicts where conflicts swiftly grow to climax, and then subside to a zero level. This is typical in Enugu, Abia, and Benue state, all in Nigeria. The few months of conflicts, six to seven, keep children out of school for almost ten months and then reels back to normalcy. This project is also suited for protracted conflicts where students stay out of school for years or end up in refugee camps. As in Bornu, Adamawa, Yobe, etc.

Where will your innovation be implemented?

The locations of implementation are;
- Enugu State, Nigeria
