What problem does your innovation solve?

12% members in Kigoma they cannot read or write. 41% completed only primary education, only 5% completed secondary education. 42% accounts for other issues from dropouts anywhere from primary to secondary school and other forms of informal education. A special attention is needed for education. Vocational training is the key to help society of this kind as it gives skills which can be directly applied depending on their environment and give them instant impact in their socioeconomic life.

Explain your innovation.

This business is targeting all primary and secondary schools drop-outs and primary and secondary students from disadvantaged families. Through this business I will introduce an education voucher scheme to the undeserved children families to cover costs for uniforms, books and stationary. The education voucher scheme will be given to child as a loan where family members will have to pay it back indirectly so as to sustain this business and serving children as many as possible. How will the family pay it back? All young people within the family where the child is coming from will be enrolled into vocational, business, information communication and technology training that will enable them to gain employment knowledge and skills that will enable them to enter labour market. Vocational graduates will be given startup capital that will enable them to invest and hence pay back the costs slowly. The technology component of my business idea will be of using learning platform/application that will be offline and online. The offline application will be installed desktop, laptop or tablet with primary, secondary and vocational, business and entrepreneurship education materials depending to the need of the customer; its cost will be paid annually. This application with all desirable materials identified to be sold to primary and secondary schools where all identified children will study.

Who benefits?

The main beneficiaries are divided into two category namely primary, secondary students, vocational training institution and education institution owners where we have local government and private sector. Others are teachers within those institution and parents where these children are coming from. For the education institution owners I will advocate for the use of the application including advertising it. Because my organization KIOO owns an education and vocational training center I will use it for advertisement where all students that will be enrolled will be using this application during their studies and their experiences in using the application will stimulate others to use the application. About age it will start to primary age and above depending on the need of the customer; gender location and others will not be the problem for the application as it will be a user friendly that applies to all ages from any location mostly when it comes to mobile users.

How is your innovation unique?

The innovation unique of this idea will be of using learning platform/application that will be offline and online. The offline application will be installed desktop, laptop or tablet with primary, secondary and vocational, business and entrepreneurship education materials depending to the need of the customer; its cost will be paid annually. This application with all desirable materials identified to be sold to primary and secondary schools where all identified children will study. My organization after a school has shown interest of buying the application we will offer them a computer where such application will be installed and they will be paying for the computer in installments. The online application will enable user to have access to the platform anywhere. A password will be given to someone that has paid for it and can access materials which he/she can download to his/her devices including mobile phone.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

The factors that will make this idea more successful are as follows below: - 1. Availability of education voucher scheme, currently there is no this kind of business to primary, secondary and vocational institution level. The only current available education support is for university students where loan is given by government however parents has no say and involvement on how the loan is spend ant its impact to the student; so having that is a great opportunity to make my business successful. 2. Distribution startup kits/capital to vocational, information and communication technology will enable graduates to enter the labour market directly without complaining availability of capital and

Experience in Implementation Country(ies)

  • Yes, for more than one year.

In-country Networks

KIOO has been working in Kigoma rural since 2004; we have realized that most of under saved children are facing challenges in accessing their daily basic needs; girls are the most affected by the problem. In the fishing camps and tobacco farming areas they are used as cheap labour. The heads of the fishing camps use their financial power to manipulate girls and to harass them sexually. This practice has increased number of adolescent parents and children with limited care services in the area.

Impact of the idea have within the applicable African countries for job creation and improvement of lives.
Children who are at risk of dropping out of school or have dropped out of school, access, attend and or complete quality formal and non-formal primary and secondary education, priority will be given to children aged 7 to 14 years old that dropped out of school or are at risk of dropping out and those who are not currently droppers. Young peoples’ household resources and ability to withstand shocks are increased through savings and access to credit. Village loan groups will be established in the targeted districts, supporting self-select groups of 30 young people to save and provide loans through revolving fund. Young people have increased access to safe and productive employment opportunities. Tanzanian young people are expected to play critical roles in supplementing household income. Young people have the necessary skills to access or create employment opportunities. Young people will undergo foundation entrepreneurship and business skills training essential for either employment.
Competitive Analysis
Currently refugees has no such program, children they are just undergoing the normal systems as of their original countries. However competition may come from books and chalk sellers as schools will form majority of our customers and customers for books and chalk suppliers. After introduction of school based education learning software, books and chalk sales to primary, secondary and vocational institution might drop as the aim is every student to have his/her own tablet with all notes. Currently there is no other players provides similar solution in the market that to meet this same need. Vocational training is provided by government and some other institution however on completion graduates are not empowered to enable them employ themselves as a result graduates are not practicing what they have learnt from vocational colleges. Revolving fund and economic groups will make this idea more successful in the region.Currently humanitarian NGOs are using a lot of money in running primary and secondary schools where 30% of it goes to books, but through this idea only three months amount will be used.
