What problem does your innovation solve?

Physical contact with other student bodies or teachers becomes difficult if not impossible. With the use of audiovisual capabilities that have been developed and tested, lenses that correct camera distortions help users appear real, as if in the same room. Flexibility of the technology allows Portals to be set up anywhere, in any setting. It is able to reach isolated communities to deliver educational and entertainment content and connect its providers (i.e teachers and institutions).

Explain your innovation.

Portals are initially spaces equipped with immersive audiovisual technology. When you enter a Portal, you come face-to-face with someone in a distant Portal live and full-body, as if in the same room. The Portal comes in many different shapes and sizes that can adapt accordingly to the site in question. It can be deployed in interior and exterior applications as containers, tents, and free standing screens. The largest (container option) can hold up to 8 adults at a time and creates the feeling of being in the same space as someone in an identical gold container somewhere else on Earth. The containers are climate controlled and easily securable. If a space already exists, the system can be installed to retrofit the room.

Who benefits?

With a well established and accredited curriculum, students who have limited access to educational facilities will be able to learn in a safe environment. Understanding the difficulty of physically bringing educators on site, Portals will be able to bridge that gap and offer assistance from qualified and caring individuals. Other legal, leisure, or medical services can also be incorporated to Portals. This can help asylum seekers needing legal assistance to receive sound legal advice or provide children with play in a safe and welcoming environment that bolsters mental security. People requiring services in native languages can have live interpreters to help translate. It can also raise awareness to disparate communities who are uninformed or misinformed of each other's circumstances.

How is your innovation unique?

It differentiates itself from existing technologies by seamlessly bridging otherwise disparate communities. It offers a more intimate experience and humane connection that is not altered or interrupted by technical aberrant flaws inherent in other audiovisual systems. An existing network of connections to other locations and institutions around the world has been established. These Portals have been tried and many are currently being used. Portals are operated by local curators and is open to the public. The programs tend to be prepared by the curators but can also be tailored for countless other functions. For example, we had made connections between librarians in Maryland USA and Kigali Rwanda for a conference.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

Developing a solid curriculum for all grade levels that can be taught in various languages is crucial. Establishing the content to be delivered through Portals is important in evolving and adapting the project to best suit its function. The curriculum itself also needs to be internationally accredited so as to allow students to be successfully integrated in foreign countries. Finding local and international institutions or tutors/teachers willing to volunteer to teach or maintain the Portals will also be vital. Providing a database of a collection of other professional volunteers like translators and lawyers would also benefit the users at large. A platform for coordinating times and booking spaces will also be beneficial to the project.

Tell us more about you.

My name is Young-Tack Oh and I am the founder of Archipleasure, an initiative for multi-disciplinary collaboration, creative exploration, and pleasurable ideas. I am currently collaborating as Design & Architecture Advisor for Shared Studios and their Portals projects. I believe there is great opportunity for application in establishing a safe and welcoming environment for education, as well as child development. They already have deployed the projects to some of the locations mentioned above.

What is the primary type of emergency setting where your innovation would operate?

  • Natural disaster
  • Armed conflict
  • Prolonged displacement
  • Extreme drought

Emergency Setting - Elaborate

Portals is meant to be readily installed in any imaginable site. We are still exploring other forms and avenues that can increase the breadth of deployable options. The system is also capable of running on low or limited bandwidths in environments with weak internet signals. This allows Portals to reach isolated communities.

Where will your innovation be implemented?

Locating areas (like Syria, Myanmar, Afghanistan) that have limited access to education for children can be cross referenced with our established network. It'll need to be tailored to be effective in other locations. Portals can come in various shapes and sizes. Settings with limited spaces or vehicular access will benefit from the tent version. And because the system can run in environments with weak internet signals, we are able to provide access to isolated communities as well.

Experience in Implementation Country(ies)

  • Yes, for more than one year.

In-country Networks

We have existing Portals in various locations around the world that can readily be accessed on the site of deployment. These Portals are currently run by local curators who are affiliated with institutions or organizations. Please refer to our website for more information regarding our current sites and partners.

Sector Expertise

  • I've worked in a sector related to my innovation for more than a year.

Sector Expertise - Elaborate

The Portals project will be carried out by our management team who have experience executing the project in multiple locations around the world. Depending on the area of deployment and type of Portal, we may want to find local contractors to build physical products. We will also need to coordinate with local officials to find the most appropriate site to install that would be efficient and safe for the community.

Innovation Maturity

  • Roll-out/Ready to Scale: I have completed a pilot and am ready or in the process of expanding.

Organization Status

  • We are a registered for-profit company (including social enterprises).

Organization Location

Washington D.C. and New York

Your idea is so awesome ! archipleasure  I love your idea and work especially the one on having a database of teachers and volunteers and an international curriculum.

Infact,I am working on curriculum development for children coming from rural or poor backgrounds and speaking vernacular. I teach them English through activities-songs,poems,reading. Currently,I am the Educationist at a Girl's Orphanage and helping reform their education system. I have seen good results as a result of experimenting after research.

I am going to start my Masters in Women and Gender studies in a month's time. This really looks exciting.
How do you want to go about building this idea ? I would like to join you. I have a strong feeling that this idea might be powerful in addressing the problem. So far the ideas I read and the ones I had did not address the weak internet connection or human touch in technology in such depth. (I could be wrong but this is what just made sense immediately ! Wow !)

Greetings Madiha,
I myself can't speak directly about the technology that is involved, but I know that it would be an ideal opportunity for the project to help with providing quality education worldwide. The communication platform is up and running but I think building the content that is effectively integrated with the technology will be crucial. Your insights into curriculum developments in specific areas will be fundamental. If you have any questions or inquiries don't hesitate to email me at

You are a repository of humanity. This will lead to good things.
Best of luck with school!

Thank you Young-Tack Oh.
I'd like to connect with you. Could you please share your LinkedIn profile? We can pick up from there. Also,do you intend to take and build this idea on OpenIDEO till the last stage?

Hi Madiha,
I`m actually not familiar with the complete OpenIDEO processes but I believe it is our intention to build this idea until the last stage. We have already built and deployed in various locations which you can check on our website at
In terms of LinkedIn,

Check out this page-
Here you will find on top of the page, the timeline for this challenge.

I checked out your website and it is awesome. I was really amazed by the images in the Refugee section.

I have sent you an invite on LinkedIn.

I would like to know how I can help you design curriculum that will work with the technology. You can tell me more about it and I will plan accordingly. In the past,I have prepared curriculum for different organisations based on need rather than same curriculum for all. Moreover, because of my association and work with orphanage and a girls orphanage and being globally connected with groups and people,I can help you with tailoring curriculum based on needs after I get to chat either on skype or hangout with the people I design for or who work with such kids.
I also can help with training teachers to teach (I am a Teacher's Trainer for 6 years now helping teachers in the social sector to teach kids effectively, especially for Muslim girls).

This is my
I would like to contribute and help you build this challenge. Let me know how you and your team are going about the process. Thanks !

Hi Archipleasure, thanks for sharing your work on the platform!

I would also be interested to learn how you address internet connectivity in hard-to-connect places? Also would love to learn a few more details about your model, how do you pick the communities you work with do you have local partners? What does it take to distribute and keep up one of these spaces?

Excited to learn more!
