What problem does your innovation solve?

It will help to integrate the refugees in Çanakkale into the Turkish communities through education and work. The refugees will become active in participating and contributing to the economic and social life of the country. They will therefore become accepted members of the Turkish society.

Explain your innovation.

We will register the refugees for online courses at www.alison.com support and monitor their progress. www.alison.com provides free courses from top providers in the world including Yale, Harvard and Oxford Universities, etc. www.alison.com is a free online education provider from Ireland which is a member of the European community. The refugees upon registration will need tablets and internet connection to access the courses of their choice. Tutors’ role will be to encourage, motivate, support and monitor students’ learning.

Who benefits?

The refugees, the local communities in which they live and society at large. In Çanakkale, Turkey there are a lot of refugees from many countries especially from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, and Somalia. The number of Syrians is 3438. The target population will be the refugees living in Çanakakle/Turkey. They will be given online Turkish Language courses and other courses so that they can work and easily integrate into the community in which they are living. We can specifically target girls and we can develop quantitative instruments of measuring the benefits of the project both to the refugees and the local economies via completion of courses, improved employability, and quantifiable economic activities. We can apply qualitative research methods to assess the benefits of the project to the refugees’ self-esteem and self-worth and the reciprocity of the benefits to the local communities.

How is your innovation unique?

Our project is unique in that it will not only provide the refugees with the Turkish Language education to help them function in Turkey but also help them to acquire professional education through online studies at www.alison.com so that they can improve their status as valued members of the communities in which they live and participate fully in its economic, social and cultural life. Besides, there has never been a project for refugees like ours in Turkey before. Our project will use education as a tool that will help integrate the refugees in Çanakkale into the Turkish society. We have the expertise to help the refugees make a positive impact in Turkey. The scope for international cooperation and partnerships for the project is immense.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

We are yet to determine the number of hours we would be required to put in per week and how many girls to start with and which other stakeholders to involve. We are in process of formally asking the Advanced Learning Interactive Systems Online (ALISON) to initiate a method of operation with us for the project.
