What problem does your innovation solve?

Access to 60% of youth population in Tanzania. Majority in urban Tanzania are connected with Smartphones. With the dropping cost of devices and lowest cost of data in the Sub Saharan region it offers unique access to the Youth population in Tanzania.

Explain your innovation.

Kitabu APP currently available on Playstore gives access to free downloads and paid. The added option of audio content creates a unique delivery platform for relevant content to the Youth of Tanzania. With just one month from launch the app has been downloaded by over 30,000 users with more than 5,000 content audio/visual downloaded. Most of the downloads have been free content. The user interface is friendly and allow for smooth reading and audio content consumption. For free content customers do not have to make payment.

Who benefits?

Tanzania Youth will benefit from downloading KitabuAPP and accessing educational content. We have already partnered with ubongo for children content and other entrepreneurship content providers. Additionally we have signed agreements with multiple universities to give access to content to college university students. Our target is to get the ministry under Tanzania Educational Institute to provide updated approved curriculum content. This will allow both teacher and students to access the right information in timely fashion. We are also adding content from Social marketing NGOs such as PSI focusing on young women health and family planning as well as HIV awareness and education on prevention. This will also be available for free on the application.

How is your innovation unique?

Currently there is no similar application in Tanzania. Most are strategically focus on selling fictional and other published content with no focus on behavior change nor distributing content for free in order to impact the Tanzania Youth. With the growing online community and lowering of Smartphone prices, we believe that Tanzania Youth will have more access to the internet. This will be a unique opportunity to engage with them in a unique way though a channel that they spend 30-40% of their daily time engaging with. By simply downloading the APP, we are putting powerful content in their hands. By adding 360 activation though social media including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter we can take the conversion beyond the APP, allowing them to share experiences and engage further on issues that matter to them the most.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

The APP is solid. Biggest gap is sourcing the right content and also promoting the APP to the right audience for them to download and experience easy access to relevant content. Many of the existing NGOs as well as government agencies are used to traditional way of distributing content. While its expensive and not measurable in terms of reach, the shift to digital is something that needs a lot of support.
The telecommunication companies have been supportive and understand the nature of their base. The challenge is content that is relevant and engaging to the Youth. We are looking at driving financial literacy among the youth and getting content that has been tested and worked in other places is something that will make a big difference.

Tell us more about you.

Jackson Group is a company founded by Kelvin Twissa. The experience from working with multiple mobile operators in both marketing, sales and mobile money was the inspiration behind building solutions that can transform lives using the mobile network infrastructure. We believe that telecoms have become a utility no different from water or electricity. For real impact, another layer of solutions has to be built independent of network limitation but rather focused on delivering to customers.

Mobile telecommunication is the main expertise. Kelvin Twissa who is the founder of Jackson Group has worked in the telecom industry for the last 12 years. Through that journey we he has experienced launching the first data network and worked on implementing mobile money for Airtel as well as Vodacom M-pesa for 4 years prior to founding Jackson Group. In that period, he had opportunity to learn key insights on what drives consumers in terms of mobile behavior. from SMS to WhatsApp and beyond.
