What problem does your innovation solve?

Our innovation aims to resolve the problem students face during re-enrollment in schools and camps due to lack of proper documents, family funds, threats like harassment and abuse, language barrier, low self-esteem, and long-term displacements.

Explain your innovation.

There are three main questions our system aims to solve: 1. How can students enrol, re-enroll in schools/camps/education portals/etc and their academic record can be saved and tracked without any need of documents? 2. How can we create a system that every child (irrespective of age /gender/ability) can have access to information and educational content in worst case scenarios (resource scarcity/community bias/harassment/on the run/etc)? 3. How is the content created for these children made more context specific without having any language barrier and variety in the medium of information/content can be brought to students? First, each children living in such emergency /disaster prone area will be registered to a portal and a unique identification code is generated to them. This portal will have all the information about their academic history, awards, time out of school ( for catch-up classes), time at a particular place, students who don't show up, etc. This UIN is generated through fingerprint detection and when they reach another camp they can be identified using the fingerprint. This portal will be used at all the camps, schools, safe places by the authorities of a bigger organisation like Government/UNICEF providing aid in such areas. Second, through these portal people around the world can contribute to content generation, which brings in variety and is screened by universities and registered organisation. Lastly, IVR as connecting medium to express/learn.

Who benefits?

Our system address the students studying in primary and secondary class drop out, especially girls and differently abled and also teachers and professionals, due to lack of funds, proper academic records/documents/ threats. This identification system will even help children to gain confidence/hope/motivation that their efforts at school or camps are registered somewhere, for better future and education opportunities. This from a security point of view will be used as easy identification of a child and through IVR based channel, an easy threat reporting system for girls and small kids. A portal for content generation and assessment body outside these areas, based on just UIN, provide ethical examination and assessment process, removing grade allocation to exploit girls. Students registered on the portal can get part time teaching opportunities landing them with incentives, especially girls.Our aim through this portal is to connect all such areas, keep safe academic data and security.

How is your innovation unique?

The initiatives taken are more in a direction towards providing students with content, but none addresses the issue of monitoring if the content is able to benefit them in future, challenges they face when unable to justify their qualification, finding a scholarship.Under emergency conditions, the first task is survival, education comes way later.Showing people, education is one key factor in survival is important.It can earn them livelihood and courage to face the world and its challenges and bring a change. We believe our idea caters to reality aspect of the situation.The technology available now, the social issue faced and needs of future. As a system, not only children who get the benefit but the people/ parents/ families are getting aid through supported ration, incentives, etc associated with education. if these kids are able to complete their education, they can come back to their states and uplift them from this crisis, for which they must be identified.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

1. The design is created based on case studies, research paper and guidelines related to emergency situations and disaster management, but actual field study is lacking, that can give more insights to refine the system. 2. We are still working on understanding the experience of a child( boy/girl/differently abled) living in such situation and how we can reduce his/her hassles and pain. 3. The system has three parts 1. UIN registration 2. Context-Specific Content Generation 3. Delivering it to students and Access to them. To work in sync an authority or organisation required to monitor these individually and together, including funds required for maintenance of the portal as well.

Tell us more about you.

We are a team of Designers with expertise in Industrial Design and Interaction Design. We are currently studying at National Institute of Design, India.Both of us are design enthusiasts and believe design is best practice when applied to social scenarios and helping others. Deep research and creating conceptual models, that are relatable and empathise with people are our core attributes.We both enjoy implementing our design and understanding more through feedback. Emergency Setting - Elaborate

Our primary setting for prototype purpose will be at schools operating in remote villages and minimum internet connectivity and proper resources in terms of teachers, materials, etc. In India, due to rigid caste system( gender bias) and high illiteracy rate, education scenario is weak and a number of students ( especially girls/ differently abled) are at risk of dropping out of school. Then it can be taken to areas affected by prolonged floods, droughts, etc like Assam, Ladhak, Rajasthan.

Where will your innovation be implemented?

After our prototyping, we can enhance our model and rectify problems, then we will take out the system to wider regions and try to connect with multiple locations. We want to take our project to places with prolonged disaster hit areas like floods, earthquakes. Ans scale it up to CAR, South Sudan, Yemen and Syria.

How has your Idea changed based on feedback?

We looked deep into the generation of UIN and the security issue related with it. Th unavailability of proper academic documents for re enrollment and education continuity was our main focus. Every child has right to education irrespective of her/his gender ,caste,ethnicity,country and we focused on it. For generation of UIN and registration to get access to education content, only basic information like name, age, gender and past school and class. So, no issue of privacy breach.

Who will implement this Idea?

Contacting a trusted organisation like UNICEF or Australian aid, etc who an donate funds and will back for user trust. Then a portal creation and maintenance team, who will develop UIN generation application, website and IVR system for content delivery, and cloud for secure storage and backup of information.Then, we need to promote UIN at schools and places could be under conflict for early registration and digitization of academic data. Also, volunteers to get kids involved by registering and securing their academic data in such areas. lastly, support from world for generous help.

What challenges do your end-users face? (1) What is the biggest challenge that your end-users face on a day-to-day, individual level? (2) What is the biggest systems-level challenge that affects your end-users?

our end users are the kids/girls/boys/differently-abled, under such extreme conditions, they are psychologically and physically exhausted, and only going back o studies can help divert their mind and keep hope alive. But its not easy for them, they are often don't get support from their guardian as survival becomes most important then safety then money then support then maybe education. Also as displaced for long time or frequently, they don't possess money and proper documents , many times required for re enrollment. They often become vulnerable to many kinds of exploitation. Even adults who want to help such kids fall for such exploitation. If they do get access to educational content , they and not assessed properly and their qualifications are not registered for higher education.

How is your organization considering sustainable growth in order to continue making an impact over time?

We are at Ideation, conceptualization and refinement phase. We are trying to detail out every possibility in terms of technology, system and application. Our plan is to create a prototype to register and generate UIN and cloud to save information, test it in our near similar surrounding/crisis prone zones and creating a model to be pitched to organisations who can donate funds, back us with trust labels and reach kids in such hostile conditions. They can also help us connect with volunteers and people who are willing to help and identify with our cause. We need funds and minimum one year time.

Tell us about your vision for this project: (1) share one sentence about the impact that you would like to see from this project in five years and (2) what is the biggest question/hurdle you need to address to get there?

Impact: We aim to bring a system for every kid across the globe to get quality education and never denied education based on gender,caste, ethnicity, country,crisis or war as they don't create these but are the main sufferers of it. Question: one question is how we can involve not only these kids and parents to register with us but also educational organisations across globe to be part of us and trust us andour database of information&ecosystem . How we can make our assessment standardized.

How do you currently measure (or plan to measure) outcomes for this project?

The outcomes we will aim at will be to estimate the student dropouts, girls,boys and issues why. Then with our UIN and content access is there any success in reduction of dropouts/or any other factor affecting it/causing the outcomes. We are aiming to test in remote areas where migration is frequent, are students coming back and able to keep up where they left their studies, what information they are able to provide. These areas also face floods and other calamities, monitoring such time.

What is the timeline for your project Idea? What are the key steps for implementation in the next 1-3 years?

Timeline for prototyping and evaluation is minimum 1 year. 1.Fund collecting, prototype building, bringing in volunteers and executing it with two or three migrating villages in India . 2.Monitoring for a year,creating and giving content and assessment,evaluating results. 3. Refinening our system based on data,connecting more villages and areas,evaluating our database and progress in terms of new joining , girl/disable child participation and re enrollment and identifying/solving dropout issues.
