Srius Star: A Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) Platform on Protection from CyberBullying and Abuse Risks For Girls

What problem does your innovation solve?

Sexual abuse and cyber bullying are important subjects that are very difficult and tender to handle, especially for individuals in a conservative environment. It is planned that the contents of education for refugee girls to be given in these subjects (sexual abuse in real settings and cyber bullying in online and mobile environments) should be given with gamified items so that they can be delivered without increasing the anxiety levels of 12-17 years old girls.

Explain your innovation.

Gamification is an effective system used to increase the participation and interest of students, especially in e-learning environments. With this gamified MOOC platform, we will help them to be ready to take action in emergency situations. A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web. MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for Girls who live in local HIcamp, and around borders of Turkey and globally. The MOOC platform that will be developed offers online education courses with scenario-based interactive animations, expert videos, reading (legal issues), collaboration with peers, community forums, counseling, and support services. In interactive scenarios, visual elements and multimedia tools will be used to overcome fundamental language barriers.Users can also choose Arabic, English and Turkish languages. It is not always easy for children who have been exposed to child abuse or cyber bullying to find someone who can talk about this issue. Girls may tend to hide this kind of situations because they think they will put their family in a difficult situation.Refugee families may also act cautiously to take legal actions and go to the police. In the MOOCs platform, tools (such as online counseling and private sending message tool) have also been added to ensure that these children reach a safe route to the authorized people without any hindrance.

Who benefits?

There is a total of one and a half million Syrian children living in Turkey. Some of them are living in refugee camps while others are scattered throughout the country. A learning platform accessible at anywhere and anytime via computers and mobile phones will make it easier to reach these girls. Studies conducted by women's associations and human rights associations in Turkey show that particularly girls (especially orphaned ones) and widowed women are exposed to sexual abuse in refugee camps.In this project, we are basically trying to reach girls between the ages of 12-17 in terms of being at risk of abduction, deceived with promises of financial opportunities and security through online platforms and also the exposure of sexual abuse in their refugee camps. Srius Star Project will contribute to their interaction both online environments and also real life, and also the habits of cooperation via community online activities offered by the MOOCs. The girls won't feel alone themselves

How is your innovation unique?

Srius Star Project promotes an online interactive learning platform for Syrian refugee girls about cyberbullying and abuse risks In this project MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) based platform will teach them what cyberbullying is and we hope that this will protect them from malicious actions on girls. They will able to explain their problems by using developed MOOCs interface without giving their private information (like names, face pic etc.) We want these girls to communicate with experts. SriusStar will be web based and courses and actions will be held in a database with texts, images, and videos. This platform can be introduced in a part of their education by communities like AFAD, Kızılay etc. , government and advertisements.This platform will provide a specialized educational content by taking common scenarios as references in the context of their cultural contexts, characteristics of refugee camps and other environments they experience as refugees in other cities.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

How might we motivate families to ensure that children receive this education on a very sensitive subject? How can we include authorized persons and institutions into this system? (community engagement) We have some insight into privacy and security perceptions of refugee girls, however we may need a deep field survey to understand how consistent we are in our forecasts.

HCI Lab aims to create innovative, qualified, creative and original projects for the future by establishing international and national collaborations in the field of open and distance learning. HCI Lab team has open philosophy consists of multidisciplinary experts such as academicians working in Open and Distance Learning, Product Design, Software Programmers, and Educational Technology as well as volunteers who are undergraduate students in Computer and Instructional Technologies.

The locations of implementation are mainly refugee camps in Turkey (a total number of 26 with a population of 3 million Syrians) and other provinces in Turkey where there is no refugee camp.

How has your Idea changed based on feedback?

Who will implement this Idea?

Dr. Nilgün ÖZDAMAR KESKİN and Duysal Tutuncu would take the lead in managing this project together. Also, one software developer and 6 part time students would be supporting this idea. We are planning to connect with Anadolu University for the establishment of infrastructure, "Center of Woman Research" for evaluation safe content for children as well as the dissemination stage of the project, and "Association of Psychologists" for the curriculum, and a non-profit volunteering community which has experience about refugees.

What challenges do your end-users face? (1) What is the biggest challenge that your end-users face on a day-to-day, individual level? (2) What is the biggest systems-level challenge that affects your end-users?

Living in one-room places with crowded families, having difficulty in maintaining privacy even for basic needs such as bathing, not participating in education due to language problems and the uneasiness of being in another country as a refugee is the main difficulties affecting their daily lives. Language barriers may cause them unable to express themselves well and It may cause them to not fully understand the malicious statements directed at them. One of the main problems these children experience is that they are at risk of being harassed by online social media tools or exposed to online bullying. They do not have enough knowledge about their rights and what they can do as a refugee in this type of abuse.

How is your organization considering sustainable growth in order to continue making an impact over time?

Online learning platforms are an important means of ensuring equality of opportunity in education.The SriusStar project aims to create a sustainable structure by working with experts and developing a MOOCs platform that allows regions to develop their own scenarios, edit content and add new content.We are planning to use university's facilities in terms of human resources and also financial opportunities. HCI lab's projects mostly based on IT technologies and this project will be a part of lab's projects. We are planning to make cooperations with non-governmental organizations and experts.

Tell us about your vision for this project: (1) share one sentence about the impact that you would like to see from this project in five years and (2) what is the biggest question/hurdle you need to address to get there?

IMPACT: "By 2021, we aim to bring our online platform to all parts of the world in collaboration with national education ministries and non-governmental organizations of the countries." QUESTION: "How do we adjust our MOOCs for a sustainable online platform with customizable parts that will respond to specific problems in different parts of the world and regions?"

How do you currently measure (or plan to measure) outcomes for this project?

In this project we aim at 3 basic outputs; First, we want all girls entering the platform to complete all pieces of training. Second, to ensure that the education provides the targeted level of information. Third, to reach 10000 refugee girls The number of girls in the database of the Srius platform who complete their education is an important success measure for us. By conducting a simple scenario-based test for girls, we want to test whether the education has achieved the intended goal.

What is the timeline for your project Idea? What are the key steps for implementation in the next 1-3 years?

1: Academic researches, developing training content with experts, interface design; creating animations & graphics, developing software and improving hardware system. Developing MOOCs platform and database model. 2: Pilot implementation in Eskişehir. Testing and improving the system SriusStar web page due to feedbacks.Final refinement. 3: Sharing the application with the users in its final state. Reconstruction of the platform for use in other countries and initiation of cooperations.
