What is your stage of development?

  • New Innovator, with less than one year of experience in ECD

Type

  • Non-profit

Describe how your solution could be a game-changer for your selected Opportunity Area (600 characters)

Since HIV/AIDS orphans are more prone to negative outcomes, they may suffer social isolation due to stigma and discrimination, both their well being and development are threatened AND since Early Childhood Development (ECD) links the child's cognitive, social, emotional & physical process, our aim therefore is to address the above through an integral approach across multiple sectors to empower caregivers to offer comprehensive services that'll enable children reach their potential development.

Select an Innovation Target

  • Service: A new or enhanced service that creates value for end beneficiaries.

Tell us more about your innovation (1500 characters)

LET'S WIPE TEARS OF INNOCENT SOULS (LWTOIS) aims at providing support to the caregivers of the HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3 years) through; community sensitization support, Education support, food, linkages to health clinics, Promoting school-based HIV education, Promotion of income generation for guardians through live stock and gardening training and financial support and linking the orphans and the caregivers to clinical services and fighting stigma and discrimination in order to address the challenges of lack of basic needs of life such as ; food, shelter, education, health care, clothing, lack of financial support and stigma and discrimination. We also aim at engaging the HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3years)caregivers and other stakeholders in order to create health early learning conditions for orphans during development as a way of archiving long lasting outcomes and thus creating a positive change in the lives of HIV/AIDS orphans, caregivers and families in the area.

What problem are you aiming to solve? (3 sentences)

Problems will include; lack of food, lack of proper shelter, lack of education support, lack of health care support, lack of clothing and lack of financial support and stigmatization and isolation of the orphans 0-3years of age regarding Early Childhood Development.

Explain your idea (5000 characters)

Initially, i and my team will set out to go and meet the local officials and other stake holders to provide guidance on how to map the local resources and services that are currently available within the community as well as identifying gaps and potential solutions. Community mobilization will then follow which will include a step by step process to inform key stake holders about our intention of addressing young orphans' needs and their caregivers with in an HIV/AIDS context. A training guide (initially prepared) will then be used by our qualified trainer to facilitate a 4 day training with caregivers on the importance of care giving and ECD. The tools to be used to effectively incorporate ECD into home based care and a framework to highlight critical needs of the HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3yeasr of age) and their caregivers with in an HIV/AIDS context and essential actions at the volunteer level to address these needs will be developed. A Pictorial guide will also be developed and used to provide key messages to caregivers on critical needs of the orphans 0-3years of age and their caregivers and suggested actions to address these needs. The guide will also reflect questions to assist the home visitors in identifying the key needs with in the household and probes to better understand the household situation. The situational analysis and community mobilization guides will be used to gather evidence with regards to what is available within the community as well as beginning the discussion on the importance of addressing the needs of the HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3years of age) and their caregivers. During these meetings, we shall gather evidence on what services are available, the barriers that hinder access to services, cultural beliefs around ECD and other pertinent information. We shall also be able to form necessary partnerships with local governments, community based organizations and the community itself to help build trust and ownership for long term sustainability.

Who benefits? (1500 characters)

The idea is creates and interactive and dynamic community-based action that can be adapted to serving the HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3years) through sensitization support, financial support, and socioeconomic support to their care givers. The beneficiaries will therefor include; -Care givers: will benefit through getting know on how to handle and care for the orphans, get supplies and financial support. -HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3years) : Will benefit through education support, healthcare, gaining proper shelter and food support as they develop to full potential. Regarding experience, I earlier in 2015 worked with a college of mine in a project that was dealing with care givers sensitization. we happened to recruit 250care givers and 400 orphans. we conducted a 5 day interaction with participants in order to acquire feed back from them. This helped us to directly connect with the community and we got to know their interests and the benefits of the project. in this i gained experience.

What kind of impact will your idea have? (1500 characters)

The idea will lead to long-lasting out comes since the training will be on going and the aspect of health insurance also supports that. The idea will by all means catalyze positive changes since the lives of the children and will improve through access to food, clothing, health/ medication, education, and shelter and financial support. Yes the idea could lead to a wider / systemic change because the trained care givers and the children after attaining knowledge from school will then sensitive others in the neighboring areas. The issue of promotion of income generation through training of care givers in gardening and live stock will also make them self reliant at one point.

How does or how could your idea impact low-income children? (1500 characters)

Since the study area is remote and the standards of living are very low, the idea is aimed at empowering caregivers of HIV/AIDS orphans (0-3years) through getting cheap, accessible and affordable services such as; education, healthcare and food.

Scale: Describe how your idea could reach a significant number of end-users. (1500 characters)

The potential market size will be 500-1000 care takers and orphans. Income generation through training of the care givers on gardening and livestock and then financial support will be the plans for long-term financial sustainability. Anticipated barriers include; harsh weather, poor and inaccessible roads and financial constraints.

Feasibility: Where are you with understanding the feasibility of your idea? Describe what you’ve done so far and your plans. (3000 characters)

We had convenient meetings done with the local community, some children service providers and care givers to discuss our intention in the community in order to welcome their support. A needs assessment was done to find out the number of care givers, number of orphans/ vulnerable children, the standards of living, (including; feeding, access to education, clothing, shelter and health care support accessibility) and also assess the knowledge levels of the care givers regarding care giving, the type and quality of services currently being offered in order to identify the needs and probably potential partners in order to implement the idea. A 3 day interaction with the identified participants was done in order to get feedback from them. This helped us to get in touch with the community and we were able to know their interests, the potential benefits of the idea and also collect their potential inputs for the idea design and thus implementation. Results included; -480 Caregivers participated. -686 Orphans /vulnerable children were got. -76 out of 480 care givers were found to have some basic knowledge regarding care giving. -The general standards of living were very poor. -Services such as health care and education were minimum and of very poor standards. -Almost half of the total children got had dropped out of school due to reasons such as, sickness, lack of school fees and lack of scholastic materials like books and pens. It's on the basis of these results that we are seeking for financial support in order to implement the idea.

Dear Sembatya,
Caring for orphans is a charitable work worthy of great applause. It attracts a lot of grace and divine providence. Our support are equally needed. If we leave them, any negative impact will affect us directly or in-directly. Please keep the good work going. Thank you very much.
- Calistus.

Hello lliriana Kacaniku.
Thanks for your comments dear. I have a few questions and concerns;
1-How many ideas will be picked to progress to the early submission and motivation phase?
2-How will ideas that reach early submission & mentor-ship phase but don't progress to the final submission be rewarded? At which phase of this challenge will awarding beginning and in which way?
Concern;
I have sofar been eliminated from a number of challenges, can there atleast be some small motivation for individuals with bright ideas but fail to be picked for the next phase? At least a few dollars could be given to such individuals who persistantly participate in more than one challenge but end up being eliminated. Lots of efforts are being put in to come up with such ideas and give the fact that there's usually a cause for writing these ideas because we have the people and lives for who we want to help out, we end up being demotivated and therefore we end up failing these lives / people since our ideas are not picked upon to progress to the next phases in order to win for them at least some thing small in order to change their lives. some of us are too cjallenged in life such in a way that even getting some one to give you 2000$ can really be perfect because it can greatly change lives. i personally therefor urge our lovely Openideo team to think about at least a small motivation for the participation more so for this on going challenge of Early childhood inovation prize.
Thank you so much and i'll be very glad if my concer is put into consideration.
It really pains to work for nothing.

Hey Sembatya Nicholas
Few days ago we shared with you the invitation to the two webinars in which you will have a chance to hear more about the Prize and ask any questions about the process. Knowing that the sponsor seeks solutions from all over the world that can be implemented in the United States, I think this is a great opportunity to hear any questions you may have on how to develop
your idea along this goal. And many other aspects of the Prize and human-centered design.

We’ll be hosting calls on
Tuesday, December 5, 4:30 - 5:30 PM PST (https://ideo.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ZxbEbA4rRPid02QEos1VtQ) and

Wednesday, December 6, 08:00 - 9:00 AM PST (https://ideo.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8ZHf8DakS4WWqAXsN_jhQQ).

In case you cant make it, feel free to email us any question you may have at ecprize@ideo.com!, and we’ll do our best to answer it during the webinar.

Sembatya,
The need you have identified is complex to say the least. I am a huge fan of empowering others with information and resources. Outlining the process may be helpful for others to understand the timeline of the intervention and how it works. I appreciate your passion in this area and wish you well!

Hello Mr.Agaba, In response to your comment, my idea is vividly about life improvement for the orphaned/ vulnerable children. This will be through providing support to care givers in form of sensitization, financial support, income generation (by imparting them with knowledge for example on gardening and livestock), health care support (through enrollment for cheap and affordable medical / health insurance packages and linkages to clinical services in the area) in order to curb problems such as lack of food, lack of clothing, lack of proper shelter, lack of health care support that are currently greatly affecting these children in Busika.

Hey Sembatya Nicholas

Thank you for sharing with us your inspiration to help the caretakers of the orphans in your village, Busika. You are trying to make an important difference in the lives of 2 target groups, the caregivers and the children that they take care of. It is very obvious that you are passionate and ambitious to see the change and impact. To this goal, what helps a lot is to narrow down the impact you seek to achieve. As I was reading your idea, I thought of the Tips Document, prepared for the Early Childhood Innovation Prize: https://d3gxp3iknbs7bs.cloudfront.net/attachments/505052a5-ca23-41cf-8ee4-a133b1becd9c.pdf

I would recommend these tips to refine impact, and especially engage end users. Past experiences show that focus group discussions or surveys highlight insights that we may not see otherwise.

So what do you think?

Feel free to check other resources at this website: http://www.designkit.org/methods. I'm certain that you may find many useful guides there.

Best regards,
Iliriana
