UPDATED: First6Years App - Baba+: Gender transformative parenting app for vulnerable communities

Updates: How has your idea changed or evolved throughout the Prize? What updates have you made to this submission? (1500 characters)

Our concept has evolved throughout the initial phase of the Prize as a result of our engagement with other applicants and our mentor. We have had exciting conversations within our team, as well as with our mentor Dima Boulad and fellow Prize applicant Dr. Tova Walsh presenting her idea on building an online platform for fathers, called DadSource. Our concept has shifted to a much more human-centered process with a clearer pathway through which we plan to reach out to our target audience and tailor our intervention to their needs. Our idea now has a more solid foundation on which to build and test our gender-transformative app for fathers to all communities in need across the globe. We were able to outline the process through which we can collect information from the very fathers we already work with. We were also able to identify potential IT partners in the US, as well as a possible collaboration with DadSource, where we will synergize to create useful information for dads while using cutting edge tailoring and customization technology. With the new additions and revisions to our plan, we will now proceed with (1) holding a workshop with a group of fathers who are currently enrolled in our Father Support Program. We hope to be able to work with our mentor, Dima Boulad, since she has helped us outline a thorough workshop program and can also support us in our work with both Turkish and Syrian fathers. Then (2) we plan to contact potential IT/design partners in the US for offers on (a) updating the app into one that allows much more user-interaction and customization—with the newly gained information from our beneficiaries—and (b) adapting the app into the US context. If we receive funding from the Prize, we will explore opportunities to work together with Dr. Tova Walsh in her DadSource project. We are currently featured on the DadSource platform as a free resource (mobile app) for fathers. We will also look into the possibility of collaborating on content as well as app evaluation and tailoring methodology between our all First6Years and Dr. Walsh’s previously piloted apps for fathers. Our partner, Promundo, will oversee and explore ways to scale up the app to specific populations in the US, including African American and Latino fathers.

Fathers are critical to child development. Yet, a majority of parenting apps caters to mothers. Our solution will engage a neglected figure in child development, fathers, seeking to engage them with information and provide tools to promote their involvement. Baba+ will take a holistic approach, tackling child care access issues alongside gender and cultural barriers facing disadvantaged families, namely Syrian refugees in Turkey and low-income communities in the U.S. The app will also be evaluated through an impact framework that will facilitate fast-cycle iterations for continuous improvemen

Poverty begets a plethora of inequalities, one of which is poor access to information and lack of knowledge on where to seek services. A free mobile phone app that pushes daily alerts to the user has tremendous potential to close this disparity. We propose one with content exclusively for fathers, providing them with information on parenting and early childhood development. The app aims to challenge harmful gender norms, while closing the information gap caused by language barriers and lack of access to services by engaging fathers from vulnerable communities to support child development. Our innovation will be based on AÇEV's "First6Years" with its 350,000+ users since its launch in 2014. The app provides up-to-date information on child development and suggestions for parent-child activities, based on AÇEV's original content with evaluated impact across 25 years and multiple cultural contexts. Available via Google Play and the iTunes Store, First6Years provides practical and immediate support for all families through push notifications, an easy-to-use interface, and a web portal. Information is supported with multimedia, including videos by our partner, Harvard Center on the Developing Child. Our innovation will (1) make an existing app accessible to disadvantaged communities worldwide; (2) be gender transformative mainly through speaking directly to fathers; and (3) evaluate impact across different cultures, contributing to the research base on parenting technologies.

What problem are you aiming to solve? (3 sentences)

Existing parenting technologies, despite their ever-improving features and design, lack a critical component needed for a gender equitable 21st century approach to child development: engaging fathers. Especially for families in fragile contexts (e.g., refugees and immigrants with limited access to resources), harmful gender roles perpetuate the disadvantage for women and girls. Parenting technologies need to promote access for these families, while also establishing cross-cultural impact.

Explain your idea (5000 characters)

First6Years Baba+ is a gender transformative parenting app suited to the needs of populations from multiple cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with age-specific information on child development and practical suggestions for parents. Based on ACEV’s existing “First6Years,” it will be translated and culturally adapted for Syrian refugees and low-income communities in the U.S. The app will also go through an upgrade with the addition of technologically enhanced, interactive features facilitating access and higher user engagement, such as gamification and location-based services, which will eventually enable app users to network and create platforms for peer support. The overall process of adaptation, improvement, and evaluation will employ design-thinking and an innovative impact framework allowing for fast-cycle iterations based on user feedback and data. 1- The Team: Our first step will be creating the “First6Years app team,” which will oversee design, development, adaptation, and evaluation. This team will include experts on content and design: early childhood experts, IT specialists, user experience designers, and researchers. Here, experts from AÇEV and our partner Promundo will join forces with contracted specialists from Turkey and the U.S. To this end, AÇEV is exploring partnership with Atölye, a transdisciplinary innovation platform. 2- Understanding the End-user: The team’s first mission will be better understanding fathers’ needs from the Baba+ component, here consulting with our NGO partners to establish the purpose, mission and objectives for our major upgrade and content development. We will establish how the app will make fathers’ lives easier by making use of our wide network of alumni in Turkey reached through our flagship Father Support Program, as well as Promundo’s wide network of professionals and communities in the U.S. as well as Latin America working for engaging men in gender equality. 3- Adaptation for multiple communities: Since the adaptation for the Arabic version and content development for fathers are both under way, undertaken by AÇEV’s early childhood experts, our next step will be initiating the same process for an English and Spanish version. During this phase, our partner Promundo will work with its U.S.-based network to culturally adapt the existing content, including the newly added father component. 4- Designing Impact Framework: In the meantime, our research and evaluation team will outline an “impact framework” with which we will evaluate the app cross-culturally. Here, we will be basing our approach on the IDEAS Impact Framework proposed by the Frontiers of Innovation at Harvard Center on the Developing Child, employing a clear theory of change, materials and an evaluation method that allow for fast-cycle iterations, continually testing our impact to ultimately broaden it to scale. Design thinking will be our priority as we make use of our access to three distinct cultures with varying needs, making technology more fine-tuned and custom-tailored to these needs, while making it available to a wider audience. The ECI Prize community will be an asset with which, as emphasized by the IDEAS Impact Framework, we will strive for shared learning to drive parenting technology forward with an innovative and informed outlook. 5- Our design, development and upgrade phase will involve visualizing the app’s structure, such as how it will flow from one page to the next, how it will link to other resources, and content; contract an app designer and developer to translate the sketch into a wire frame. Then, we will strategize about marketing the app, i.e., reaching our target audience, through cost-effective online and offline channels. 6- Next will be the testing phase to determine how useful the app is for fathers, what channels are effective in reaching them, and how to improve both content, promotion, and distribution. Once developed and tested, we will launch the app in target communities with the end users, administering baseline surveys and monitoring user engagement. 7- Scaling up: As we monitor the use and impact of our app and iteratively make the necessary adjustments, we will finally aim to bring this impact to scale through establishing a more comprehensive plan for promoting the app with government partners, global NGO networks, private companies, and online promotion channel providers. These networks will also be critical in maintaining the kind of user engagement we hope to enhance, creating new avenues for collaboration as we work towards facilitating access to services and supporting child development in fragile contexts. The app’s online portal will follow the same phases of development, adaptation as well as constant monitoring, evaluation, and upgrade. We hope to add to the suite of programs through a multi-sectoral approach, as the app’s evidence-base is established and collaboration with important stakeholders gains momentum.

Who benefits? (1500 characters)

The beneficiaries of our idea will be the global English, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish speaking communities with a focus on vulnerable populations, including Syrian refugees in Turkey and low-income communities in the U.S. The beneficiaries will gain information on child development and parenting while accessing a network of same language users via this free app. AÇEV’s 2016 study on fatherhood in Turkey found that 91% of men see their spouses as primary caregivers of the child. Therefore, girls and women will benefit from increased father involvement, while fathers will have the opportunity to be more engaged in their child’s development. AÇEV has extensive experience with both mothers and fathers of young children through long-term, face-to-face programs, reaching 500,000 mothers and 80,000 fathers, respectively. The First6Years app, which has reached over 350,000 downloads, has now been translated to Arabic in collaboration with UNICEF Turkey, its beta version ready to go online in January 2018. Beyond this app, AÇEV has reached almost a million beneficiaries via face-to-face trainings in Turkey and 14 countries worldwide, besides many millions through its TV programs, online portals and advocacy efforts. Promundo implements evidence-based, multi-pronged initiatives to promote men’s involvement in caregiving, maternal and child health and non-violent fatherhood, and has a strong track record of scaling up interventions engaging men with public and private institutions.

What kind of impact will your idea have? (1500 characters)

ACEV’s 2016 study revealed that men are not involved in child care, with 91% not assuming childcare responsibility. Additionally, of the 4 million refugees in Turkey, only 25% of children aged 0-5 obtain necessary health checks and more than 40,000 women are pregnant. Challenges and risks to child development are exacerbated due to restrictive gender norms that limit women’s decision-making power. Nevertheless, one out of three fathers in Turkey say that they want more information on child health and development. First6Years Baba+ will provide critical information to men on how to support maternal and newborn health and early childhood development, and encourage them to assume this responsibility by referring them to resources, and promoting connections with other fathers. AÇEV has evidence from its 22 years of implementing its flagship Father Support Program that men in Turkey want more guidance on fatherhood and that when supported, their gender-equitable parenting attitudes do change. Promundo’s work in Latin America and worldwide also attest to this evidence. Providing these households with free, easily accessible, and gender equitable information on child health and development will not only encourage more families to seek services and fill the information gap, but also create societal change where masculinity norms are challenged within the realm of fatherhood—resulting in improved child outcomes in vulnerable communities, where such norms are more prevalent.

How does or how could your idea impact low-income children? (1500 characters)

Our idea is an effort to bring parenting mobile technology to low-income, disadvantaged families from three distinct backgrounds in two countries. Baba+ messages for fathers will transmit knowledge on maternal and newborn health, child development and wellbeing, ways of supporting mothers in childcare, and available public services, thus transforming the way we respond to the child development needs of low-income populations. From 2013 to 2015, mobile phone and network use in Turkey increased by 20% and 15%, respectively. It is expected that 70% of the world’s population will own smartphones by 2020, which indicates an increased demand for mobile technologies by all social strata. The Early Learning Lab’s study with users of parenting technologies supports this evidence, where low-income adults in the U.S. are found to more likely use mobile technology. AÇEV and Promundo will rely on their existing strong network of public, private and civil initiatives in making this app available to low-income families, which have thus far been AÇEV’s primary audience. The Early Learning Lab’s study also points out that parents find support services helpful, and at AÇEV we know from our own fatherhood research that fathers want more parenting support. With its father component, the app will not only create immediate child outcomes through more involved fatherhood, but also enable more mid- and long-term change that will empower women through a gender transformative approach to parenting.

Innovation: What makes your concept innovative? (5000 characters)

Our concept brings innovation into the early childhood space through its gender transformative approach to parenting technologies by challenging the gender norms that underpin men’s lack of involvement in fatherhood. Studying the Interactive Parent Tech Map provided by OpenIDEO and looking through all of the brilliant ideas brought into the Prize community, we see that fathers still do not get the attention and support they need to be involved in their children’s lives. Our app aims to challenge harmful gender norms by promoting men’s equal responsibility and influence in child development. In turning this idea into reality, we are now planning more innovative and human-centered ways of involving our target population. Thanks to guidance from our mentor Dima Boulad, we now have a solid plan for doing this: We will hold a one-day workshop (or multiple workshops) with the fathers who join our Father Support Program in Turkey. Another workshop may include those who are not in the father support groups to diversify our data. The workshop will help us to better understand the needs and preferences of these fathers. To build on our findings, we will then strive to enhance our app in content and design to serve these needs and preferences. We also had an informative discussion with fellow Prize contestant Dr. Tova Walsh, we came up with ideas for tailoring the app to users’ needs and adding the kind of features we have dreamt of. These features include location-based services built into the app, resembling local search-and-discovery apps, where fathers can get notified of child-and-father-friendly spaces they can visit, such as children’s movies or exhibitions to see. Also provided in the app’s “fathers exclusive” section will be stories they can read and songs they can sing together. Most importantly, we will create avenues for users of the app to bond over fatherhood—through activities first facilitated by ACEV and our local US implementers (possibly Promundo) and then through features in the app that enable fathers to plan gatherings with other fathers in the area through a built-in event-planner much like the “events” features on social media, where they can see who else in their app-user social circle is attending a certain event. This way, they can go to soccer games or child-related events together, or plan similar activities. We expect this “brotherhood over fatherhood-”themed networking to create the strongest effect in supporting fathers in their parenting roles. These app ideas will take their final shape once we conduct our human-centered work with the fathers.

Scale: Describe how your idea could reach a significant number of end-users. (1500 characters)

ACEV and Promundo will combine expertise and access to global networks to adapt and expand the app. The scale-up strategy involves launching Baba+ in Turkey with the Syrian refugee population through partnership with UNICEF Turkey, and then reaching out to the low-income communities in the U.S. through Promundo’s collaboration with local stakeholders. Ultimately, via local partners supported by their governments to innovate tech solutions to address disparities in early childhood development, the app can be scaled globally in English, Arabic and Spanish speaking countries. This collaborative approach also leverages each local partner’s potential to tailor Baba+ to contextual needs. A challenge we foresee is maintaining the app to retain users and attract new ones. Here, we will design the app with an open interface so maintenance is not centralized: partners adapting the app can update it based on their local needs. An app is relatively cheap to maintain if designed and promoted effectively. Thus, during the development phase the design team will keep potential scalability and sustainability issues in mind. We will also explore alternative channels to connect with our target father population. ACEV’s track record in multi-sectoral collaborations and influence on policies and trends promises to sustain Baba+’s expansion and reach.

Feasibility: Where are you with understanding the feasibility of your idea? Describe what you’ve done so far and your plans. (3000 characters)

ACEV brings a set of expertise areas that will ensure the feasibility of this idea: 1- Expertise on Content, Target Population and Multi-sectoral Collaboration: AÇEV has developed and implemented numerous programs since 1993 in collaboration with hundreds of local and international organizations and governmental bodies. ACEV has successfully managed these various stakeholders’ contributions and expectations by placing beneficiary needs and sensitivities at the heart of all of its design, delivery, and evaluation phases of collaborative projects. In launching Baba+, ACEV will maintain all product content, beneficiary data and ensure Baba+ has the intended impact, while partners will provide input into the design of and channels to promote the service. 2- Expertise on App Technology and Scalability: The current app is based on an existing app developed, promoted, maintained, and now adapted, through above-mentioned strategies, mainly private sector and I-NGO collaborations. An important new phase in the life of this app will begin with this Prize thanks to the creation of a team (including full-time staff and contracted experts) whose main role will involve ensuring feasibility from a technical and operational standpoint through a continuous and iterative process of testing and evaluation. For implementation and financial support, we rely on AÇEV and Promundo’s collaborative methodology and intend to widen the network of contributing stakeholders to scale up through established impact, effective design integrating user feedback and ultimately effective use of multiple communication channels to promote the app.

Business Viability: How viable is your business model? (5000 characters)

First6Years, ACEV’s current app, is free with a particular aim to reach disadvantaged, low-income populations. Our business model, therefore, is mainly based on sponsorships and other support through corporate partnerships. We currently have an ongoing funder relationship established with a leading international mobile service provider, Vodafone Turkey Foundation, which has enabled us to develop and scale up our app. If we receive funding from this Prize, our goal is to establish a similar model for scale-up in the US. AÇEV has made it a part of its strategy in fundraising and advocacy to nurture relationships with the private sector as an important stakeholder in early childhood development. Our work with the private sector has recently focused on involved fatherhood, aiming to mobilize corporations in supporting involved fatherhood both in the workplace and in the goods/services they provide. As part of this ongoing work, we conducted an activity involving a human-centered approach, where we asked representatives from corporations about their experiences as mothers and fathers, ultimately creating a “persona” from the corporate world. The positive response and kind of synergy created through such work inspires us in building our strategy in future partnerships. We will prioritize such collaborative approaches in creating funds and ensuring sustainability for our app. As a back-up plan, we may present a donation option to those users who wish to contribute to bringing our app to wider audiences. This way, we can also contribute to creating a culture of giving to support the development of children and their parents in the community.

HCD: How have you used human centered design to build or refine your concept? (5000 characters)

Conversations with our mentor, Dima Boulad, have informed our next steps in the process to incorporate a stronger human-centered approach to our program design. Dima suggested that we conduct a workshop with potential users of the app to understand their fatherhood experiences, needs, and preferences better. This, we thought, could be easily done with the participants of our Father Support Program, since we have direct access to these fathers. However, conducting a second workshop with fathers who have not attended the Father Support Program can significantly diversify our data and contribute to a better understanding of our target population. Dima has generously shared with us a sketch and her ideas in how to make the best of a one-day workshop to work with the fathers to create the ultimate user-friendly, effective father app/content. Speaking with our mentor also made us realize the potential we had in making our work more human-centered, overall. A realization we had was how we could use findings from our 2016 research study, the State of Fatherhood in Turkey released in 2017, to create the average user profile, “persona,” for our app. This existing information, coupled with our workshop, can provide us with comprehensive information as to what kind of services we can provide to low-income fathers, and fathers from different walks of life, to first support them in becoming more involved in their child’s development and then helping them sustain this involvement in a way that is optimal for their children. Taking the research idea one step further, our conversation with potential partner, researcher Dr. Tova Walsh (DadSource), inspired cross-cultural research as part of the app. As also stated in our original application, data collected through human-centered design work with fathers, alongside those collected by the app itself, can help us understand different states, aspects, tendencies in fatherhood globally. This will not only inform academic work on fatherhood, parenting and child development, but also contribute to the success of the app in bringing fathers worldwide the kind of support they need to be more involved in child development.

Since 1993, AÇEV’s mission has been to make a lasting contribution to society by supporting the development of children and their environments through education starting from early years. Spanning early childhood, parenting, and adult literacy, AÇEV’s programs have targeted all stages of human development and all members of the family from early childhood to parenthood. Our programs have common goals of reducing disparities in various domains: as our preschool programs aim at equal opportunity, our literacy and parent support programs address gender equality. AÇEV’s story dates back to the early 1980s when three women, professors in psychology and early childhood development, developed a home-based early intervention program and tested its impact. The longitudinal study following the first cohort of what was later to become the “Mother Child Education Program” (AÇEP) for 22 years showed that the program’s impact was remarkable: Children whose mothers participated in AÇEP had a higher likelihood of attending university, attained higher status jobs, and had higher income, among many other positive outcomes. The program led to the establishment of AÇEV and later to the development of a range of intervention programs for young children and their parents. It excites us that early childhood bears such potential to bridge the opportunity gap, playing a huge role in sustainable development. Our work with fathers has revolutionized the way we, as well as those we have collaborated, understand the importance of fatherhood as critical to child development and an avenue for engaging men in fighting gender inequity and violence against women and girls. Starting with the implementation of our Father Support Program in 1995, our work on fatherhood also continues through research and advocacy with the support of various funders, such as the Bernard van Leer Foundation and the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. Promundo is a global leader in promoting gender justice and preventing violence by engaging men and boys in partnership with women and girls. Our research, programs, and advocacy efforts show that promoting healthy masculinity (or positive notions of “what it means to be a man”) and femininity (or “what is means to be a woman”) leads to improvements in men’s own lives, and in the lives of women and girls. We envision a world where all people work to create a nonviolent, caring, and gender-equitable future for themselves and for their children. Both AÇEV and Promundo have ongoing partnerships and expertise for content development, implementation, and scaling up. Nevertheless, in forming our “First6Years app” we will be in need of leading field experts in user experience design, as well as other IT experts to ensure effective design and evaluation. With regards to context-based adaptation of content, our team will be most effective with the addition of experts from the U.S., who have a better grasp of parenting app technologies, as well as a better command on the local needs and preferences, preferably those of low-income families.

As you consider your next steps, what kinds of help could you use? Is there a type of expertise that would be most helpful? (1800 characters)

We are well-versed in early childhood development and parenting, but could benefit from collaborating with designers and IT experts—especially those specializing in user experience. Collaborators from the U.S. will have invaluable contributions as we expect a considerable amount of important advances and leading technologies in this field to come from the U.S. Collaborators from the U.S. will also have more experience with and knowledge of our target population in the U.S., namely disadvantaged, low-income communities in need for support in early childhood development. Therefore, those innovators within the ecosystem of this Prize with experience in working with low-income families on early childhood development will be more than welcome to participate and contribute to our innovation!

As in our quest for collaborating innovators, we would benefit most from mentorship on user experience design. Our app has reached a considerable audience in Turkey since 2014 but moving into its new phase, it would require expertise on parenting technologies, particularly one with a cross-cultural outlook. We would like our mentor(s) to refer us to potential collaborators, resources which would enable us to form a strong “First6Years app team” which will drive sustainable change in the way we manage the app. We would also benefit from mentorship on reaching out to low-income communities in the U.S. within the parenting app market. Again, mentorship on possible collaborations and methodologies would empower us in realizing our aspiration to make this a cross-culturally validated app reaching multiple communities in need, globally.

Mentorship: How was your idea supported? (5000 characters)

We worked with our mentor, Dima Boulad, to strengthen the human-centered aspect of our idea. Dima provided us with great insight as to how we can include the fathers in the process of upgrading the app into one that is more user-friendly and effective—and most importantly, successful in engaging our target audience. As explained above, Dima suggested that we conduct a workshop with fathers from our Father Support Program groups—possibly another workshop with those outside the Father Support Program community—where we hear about their needs. The process, which we plan to conduct by the end of March, will involve the following steps: - Fathers from 5 or 6 different profiles with differing ages, SES, number of children, risk (such as refugee groups who are within our target population)—including grandfathers or single fathers; - A venue that provides enough space for fathers to walk around and comfortably participate in the exercises presented; - Stations with posters at each station collecting information from fathers on their individual profile and on various fatherhood moments—the highs and the lows; - Questions prompting stories and “a day in the life of…” through voice recording and/or creative writing, drawing, etc. Voice recording in designated areas where fathers can record their stories by themselves, e.g. separate rooms, can facilitate more intimate sharing; - Posters for fathers to answer our big questions: How can Baba+ make your life better? How do you think we can contribute to society with this app? In the case that we receive the Prize, we hope that our mentor also be part of the process, supervising design and evaluation of the app. We think that her knowledge of the Arabic language will be an additional asset in working with Syrian refugee fathers.

Our idea now has a more solid foundation on which to build and test our gender-transformative app for fathers to all communities in need across the globe. We were able to outline the process through which we can collect information from the very fathers we already work with. We were also able to identify potential IT partners in the US, as well as a possible collaboration with DadSource, where we will synergize to create useful information for dads while using cutting edge tailoring and customization technology. With the new additions and revisions to our plan, we will now proceed with (1) holding a workshop with a group of fathers who are currently enrolled in our Father Support Program. We hope to be able to work with our mentor, Dima Boulad, since she has helped us outline a thorough workshop program and can also support us in our work with both Turkish and Syrian fathers.
