When the Sun Comes Up

This manuscript is designed for interaction and relationship building between a child 0 - 3 and the Caregiver.

Photo of Katharine Crawford Robey

Written by

The child goes through the beginning and end of a  day, based on the context of what to put on-- learning about and touching (or manipulating) wool, Velcro, snaps, zippers, mirrors. When the sun goes down, the child learns about a bath, bedtime, and dreams (touching flannel cloth, seeing sparkles, feather, shiny tinfoil) and thinks about the next day in the context of what to put on.

Describe the intended vision for your early childhood book manuscript in 1-2 sentences

When the Sun Comes Up By Katharine Crawford Robey When the sun comes up, What do you put on? A warm red cap? (Insert red wool) Cool green shoes? (Insert green canvas) Something with a snap? (Insert snap) Maybe yellow elastic That would be fantastic! (Insert yellow elastic) When the sun goes down, What do you put on? Bare skin in the bath? Bubbles that make you laugh? Maybe you wear a onesie to bed Or is that Baby instead? Put on something old or new But make it blue. (Insert blue flannel) When the moon comes up full and bright Does Someone read to you and hug you tight? Do you wear a hug, too? And say “I love You?” *** (Reader can end here if baby is young) When your dreams come along, What do you put on? Maybe you wear feathery wings (Insert a feather) And fly around to see things. Like Will Penn’s hat below? (Illustrate Philadelphia City Hall showing statue atop) Or the Schuylkill River flow? Maybe your wings hover well And you touch the Liberty Bell (Insert something a little stronger, but shiny and silver like tinfoil) Sweet dreams all the way until dawn. When the sun comes up, what will you put on? The End

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

Yes, absolutely, I'm a professional writer and have read many, many board books. Also I'm a mother, and now grandmother-- and have hands on research, as well as learning from pediatric doctors-- who have read and helped me develop this manuscript.

Please describe any familiarity you may have with Philadelphia and its residents? (optional question)

I have visited Phillie several times over a time span of thirty years. My sister used to live there.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

Yes, I have-- but I expect the illustrator to lend a hand! I hope children will bond with their caregiver. That is the starting point for bonding with any other individual in the community.

Katharinecrawfordrobey.com (My apologies, the website needs updating. I'm currently working with the University of Georgia Press on a book for ages 7 - 10 on bird migration; and working with Old Mission Press and an illustrator on the sequel to a legend based in NW MI.) I teach creative writing to children in the summer in the village of Empire, MI. My granddaughters are ages 4 and 7.

Please read above. My priority is to infuse my readers with the concept of love.

Provide an example visual identity for a look and feel you might like to achieve. ( (optional question, 3-5 visuals)

The illustrator should familiarize little ones with the communities of inner city Philadelphia in a colorful, and textural way. Every good illustrator knows Snowy Day and the other classics. I sometimes work with my own illustrator but she is from Baltimore not Philadelphia.

Fabulous! Were you able to access the text, I hope? Any ideas for illustrations? I did research on animals at the Philadelphia Zoo as well as having visited. Any suggestions?

Hi Ashanti,

Yes, I've read the entire website, I think, by now. I always have my own ideas for illustrations and probably should include that if I failed to-- meant to. Many thanks, K

Hmm! Good story line. She will love this when she grows.
Maybe your wings hover well
And you touch the Liberty Bell
Hope she will excel well.

Dear Ashanti,
Thank you for your lovely thoughts. How old is your child now? I’m asking to see what to add to the story, what to take out, if anything. Or possibly make the book into two books, “When the Sun Comes Up;” “When the Sun Goes Down.”

How old is your child, I wonder? Are you thinking I should include your last line?

Hi, I do not have any, however, I have had the opportunity to help raise many nephews and nieces. If it fits well with your your general thought is, then you can include it. Again, the idea of a sequel for your book is a good one which you can explore.
Good luck Kathrine, my mom is a Catherine as well.

Dear Ashanti, Since you’ve helped raise nieces and nephews, you are an expert! I want the illustrations to be colorful and show scenes from Philadelphia.
Thank you for wishing me well— and I love it that your mom is a Catherine!

Now that I found the story it's interesting the way you have layered it.
There is a point where one can stop for little ones or to go on for older ones.
It is indeed a challenge as the age range is so wide. Good effort at addressing that.

>>Do you wear a hug, too?<<
I like the concept of wearing a hug.
Interesting.
