Through a blue and quiet sky, humans can hear the breath of the Mountain. She is calm and pure. She is safe in this forest. « Thanks to the child who cleans my forest, I’m in good hands, thinks the sleepy Mountain. » Her mind is peaceful, because she can live in a tidy house.

Eruption of toys !

During this event, the Mountain is becoming a Volcano. From her head are escaping her friends like ‘‘ Green ’’ the laughing Triangle, ‘‘Blue’’ the happy Circle, ‘‘Pink’’ the smiling Square and ‘‘Yellow’’ the shiny Star! There are all living wonderful stories through the skies. But do no mistake about it, after a long eruption, the Mountain needs to rest. Each moment has a start and an ending. To let her rest put all the Mountain’s friends in her head. By this way, the Mountain can sleep peacefully below the quiet sky.

Describe the intended vision for your early childhood book manuscript in 1-2 sentences

To avoid frustration between parent and child, when it comes to cleaning the room, brushing the teeth, or even bathing. Why not learn those activities in a playful manner?

The Power of Storytelling

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

The first idea was to create the cognitive skill of child without screens, based on the Céline Alvarez's work (Neuroscience, is so interesting!). Human are definitely social, the Templeton World Charity Foundation have prove it, through their experience about altruism. Also, the game design is about interacting. As Raph koster said : " The very phrase " It's just a game" implies that a game is form of PRACTICE for a real-life challenge." So I decide to create a story where parent and child can interact to learn how to do daily activities. Encourage parents to name the elements to toy with. In this way, the child will be engaged in the action because he will empathize with the character of the story. A story designed to solicit the child's help. The goal is to root the knowledge through a joyful moment. The game have to be tested, on linked pictures you can see how to interact with the book. I have to find the best way to explain parents how to create an enjoyable moment.

Please describe any familiarity you may have with Philadelphia and its residents? (optional question)

I'm living in France, so I have no familiarity with this specific user. In France, there are many places where people have difficulties to educates children because of their economical / social or legal context. It's hard to be parent, no one will teach them. Parents learn to become by being parent. They also don't know how the brain works. How stimulate their child's brain. That's why I've design a game-book. Because game designers knows how motivates behaviors using cognitive biases and neuroscience, and because humans know how to play. The combination seems logical for me. It can fits to every caregivers.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

The intention is to create link between parent and child, in daily activity, like brush the teeth, tidy up the room etc. The very first idea was to shape the perception of the daily habits to make them pleasant for both parent and child. The main goal is to interact physically with a story character. The children's book was born. First, the parent explain by performing. Second, the child mimic. Third, the parent explain how to bridge the action in story with a real-life action. Fourth, child mimic the character of story in real life. The book become a way to explain about how & why a child can perform a specific action. For the parent, they use child's imagination to communicate.

Tell us more about you / your team

Lucas De Pinho. I'm a 22 year old Industrial Design student in year 4. It's the first year I'm studying Design. Before, I've studied animation for 3 years. I've also worked for a serious game as a game artist. I've first did this project by myself. I've worked with a professional teacher to build the early project, she helped me to analyse the problem of communication. And she left after this phase. I've designed the interaction around a specific problem, like cleaning the room. I've answered some questions. How to transform this activity in a story ? How to design a character easy to empathize with ? Which material to use ? How will the parent interact with child and both with the book ? My goal is to get many stories that help the caregiver to teach an activity to the kid : Keep the room, wash the body, wear a cloth in function of weather, brush the teeth, going to pee / to poo, create a quiet mood for sleeping, eat on morning, share the meal together, how to count, etc...

Very interesting idea! One quick edit in "Thanks to the child who clean my forest, I’m in the good hands, thinks the sleepy Mountain", change 'clean' to 'cleans' and take out 'the' after 'I'm in..."
While I really like your use of the mountain and volcano, children are very literal and may have difficulty understanding the comparison. Many parents can relate to an eruption of toys!
