This book encourages loved ones to read to young children by sharing simple day to day scenarios where opportunities exist to "read out loud".

Reading With Baby

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

There is a significant body of research that indicates both language and cognitive developmental benefits in reading to infants and toddlers. One such example is a meta-analysis conducted by researchers at the Puckett Institute that covered 11 studies including 4,020 participants (“Relationship Between Age of Onset and Frequency of Reading and Infants’ and Toddlers’ Early Language and Literacy Development”). Other supportive research include publications in peadiatric journals, two relevant research publications to include are "Mitigating the effects of family poverty on early child development through parenting interventions in primary care." and "Literacy promotion: an essential component of primary care pediatric practice." The power of reading, rhyme, and repetition are also expanded upon in The Cox Campus’ “Learning Center for Learning and Development of Toddlers" educational videos on Reading and Rhyme.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

The manuscript is reflective of those living in urban contexts through the examples that are shared, grocery shopping, playing in the park, riding in the elevator. Readers will benefit from my manuscript by understanding that reading out loud with young children can happen in a variety of contexts and is not exclusively for reading together at bedtime (which is often not possible for every family). Some direct benefits that I hope to create are encouraging caregivers to feel empowered to engage with their infants and toddlers meaningfully through simple daily activities.

Tell us more about you / your team

Although I am not from the Philadelphia area, I am a first generation immigrant living in the Greater Toronto Area. I have a personal passion for social issues, including diversity, equality, language development for non-native English speakers, and bridging the gender and income gap through early educational intervention. I have spent several years working in research at the Institute of Child Study, focused on children in high needs and at risk communities, their caregivers, and their educators across the Greater Toronto area and in Aboriginal regions in Northern Ontario. My professional background includes a Masters in Child Study and Education as well as an elementary school teaching certification with a specialist in special needs education.

My vision for the visuals of this book include colorful images depicting children and adults from a range of backgrounds. I envision outdoor scenes to include local Philadelphia based landmarks to help bring a local feel to the target audience.

I really enjoyed reading this Sarah and like the way that it introduces so many family members and celebrates the joy of reading. I wondered if you could swap the first two stanzas so that your second stanza is your first and mirrors the final stanza. I also wondered if the bath time scene could show reading a bath time book with baby to show that all the reading experiences are leading up to him /her reading her own book. Just suggestions, I think this is such a lovely idea :o)
