Proud To Be Me

for Cecilia

and for Petra

Little Darlin’, you’re incredible

There’s no one quite like you

Glorious and stupendous

Sweet honey child, there’s magic inside of you!

You are loved so very much

Exactly as you are

My dear sweetheart, you are one of the

Brightest, shining, shimmering stars!

You are such delicious goodness

Sing the song that’s in your heart

Plant flowers, write stories, eat ice-cream,

Play outside, make art

Share your magic with the planet

And the people that you meet

Be true to who you are

And go by your own beat

Dance beside the river,

Gaze up at the sky

There’s beauty all around you

Don’t let this magic pass you by

Find beauty wherever that you go

And then wherever you are,

Add a happy rainbow

May you choose happy over and over again

May you be surrounded by creatures that love you

And are proud to call you friend

May each day be full of smiles

And lots and lots of play

My lovely honeypie, it’s a good day for a good day!

Looking at you

I can feel my heart explode with delight

You radiate happy and

Fill the world with your sweet light

You are loved enormously

You are made of rainbows and sunshine

You are pure magic little one

I’m so lucky that you’re mine

Go forth and be awesome

Be brave, be bold, be true

Be proud of who you are

Amazing child, there’s such magic inside of you!

Describe the intended vision for your early childhood book manuscript in 1-2 sentences

My vision for this book is for parents and caregivers to read this book to their child/children as a way to foster the child's self-confidence and self-worth, and also to convey a message of the adult's total commitment of believing in the child and all that he or she can do, to the point that the child internalizes this belief that they can, will, and already do many great things.

Please describe any familiarity you may have with Philadelphia and its residents? (optional question)

I live in Philadelphia and am familiar with many different groups of people who call the city home.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

Any child anywhere needs tools to help build their self-esteem. I think the illustrations could be used to create an urban context that parallels the words. All children deserve to be told repeatedly how special, unique, and magical they are, until this message becomes internalized and the child fully believes in their own ability to make good choices, to make a difference, to do things that may be out of their comfort zone, and to reach out to someone with love and kindness.

Tell us more about you / your team

I value the relationships between children and adults. I value communication and bonding. I value children and hope to encourage others to treat children with respect and help them to grow into kind, respectful adults.

Provide an example visual identity for a look and feel you might like to achieve. ( (optional question, 3-5 visuals)

I think the illustrations could help provide the urban context a lot. Collaged colorful images of a little girl with braids in her hair and rainbow colored flower barettes, possibly depicted alongside of her grandmother and mother, both who also have long braids in their hair. Possibly riding the trolley together, happy, diverse parks, and brick walls with inspiring graffiti would also be helpful in setting the scene. One image of the child smiling at herself in a store window would be great.
