My Siesta Steed

By: Sherry E Engler

Night has fallen. Time to go to bed.

Time for Siesta Steed to visit dreams in my head.

Siesta Steed is a magical horse with flapping wings.

When he visits me, we fly to see beautiful things.

We fly from Philadelphia, on to New York and LA

We visit cities ALL over, Boston, Phoenix and Santa Fe.

As we fly, we sing as loud as we want to sing

We sing numbers, letters and colors and things.

We sing 1-2-3 as we trot from star to star.

We sing A-B-C as we travel many miles far.

We sing about colors: green, red, and blue.

I sing loud, loud, loud and Siesta Steed sings too.

We gallop fast around the moon so yellow bright.

The wind tingles our faces as we soar with delight.

After many stops, laughs, giggles and good things.

Siesta Steed flies me quickly home with his mighty wings.

Siesta Steed bids a goodbye as he flies on his way.

For Mr. Sun is waking turning night into day.

Farewell Siesta Steed, my wonderful nighttime friend.

For I shall see you again in my dreams at day’s end.

Describe the intended vision for your early childhood book manuscript in 1-2 sentences

Siesta Steed is written to give the young child comfort when trying to fall asleep. Instead of being apprehensive about scary monsters, the young child will focus on the delight of flying to beautiful dreams with magical Siesta Steed, singing numbers, letters, and colors during the magical flight.

My Siesta Steed

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

My Siesta Steed is a delightful way to read to the young child and instill the importance of beginning the learning process of numbers and letters. I believe Zero to Three and Talking is Teaching support this manuscript because My Siesta Steed is a wonderful way for parents and/or caregivers to converse, read, sing and communicate with a young child just beginning to grasp words and word usage. Because My Siesta Steed is written in rhyme, the young child will enjoy the beat and rhythm in the usage of sounds.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

I have included Philadelphia as the starting point of the magical flight with Siesta Steed. The magical horse flies from Philadelphia, New York and other cities as the small child and the horse explore the world of dreams and the possibilities of travel.

I am an author and illustrator. I believe in the importance of literacy for all ages. I also believe through the clever and imaginative uses of words, we will be able to make reading an invaluable gift whether it is an informative written work or entertaining manuscript. By capturing the interest of the reader, the author is able to inform, promote and share the gift of words which is critical for the young child just beginning to explore new language, sounds and concepts. I think that this concept is a bit much for a child's level, at 0-3 years. Children learn what they live.

Thank you Perlina for your insight. My hope is My Siesta Steed will take the child to a happy place before bedtime. In the world of reality, the small child may be frightened of things like imaginary monsters, etc. It is my wish, Siesta Steed will calm the small child with imaginary fun and good time adventures.

I think it defeats the whole purpose but have fun with it.
