Jane Dreams, The Sankofa Sings

Jane has a dream about the Sankofa bird singing with their animal friends.

Jane was tired, so she went right to sleep.

Jane began to dream about a Sankofa bird that can sing.

The Sankofa flew round and round to her friends

The Sankofa was happy, and sang to each one of them.

When the Sankofa spotted the dog and sang, “ Foow, Foow.” The Dog smiled and sang back, “Woof, woof!”

The Sankofa then saw its friend the cow and sang, “Oom, oom.” The cow smiled wide and sang back, “Moo, moo!”

The Sankofa flew past the canary and sang, “Teewt, teewt” The canary flew in a happy circle and sang back “Tweet, tweet!”

Lastly, the Sankofa saw the cat and sang, “Woem, woem.”’ The cat purred with joy and sang back, “Meow, meow!”


All the animals were now singing with the Sankofa:

The Dog sang, “Woof, woof” and The Sankofa sang back, “Foow, foow.”

The Cow sang, “Moo, moo” and The Sankofa sang back, “Oom, oom”

The Canary sang, “Tweet, tweet” and The Sankofa sang back, “Teewt, teewt.” 

The Cat sang, “Meow, meow” and The Sankofa sang back, “Woem, woem.”

The Sankofa kept singing inside of Jane’s dream.

Jane was happy to dream about a Sankofa bird that sings

The intended vision with the book is to create a playful experience between parent/instructor and child on sounding out the noises the Sankofa bird makes toward each animal in the story.

I believe it will provide an opportunity for positive interaction by sounding out the noises that the animals make and also establish a healthy curiosity on the background on the Sankofa Bird. Introducing elements of Parent and child engagement as well as diverse cultural background research.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

Yes, because the Sankofa bird origins come from the African country of Ghana. creating the dialogue in urban areas about African folklore and stories.

I am a self-published children's book author from Seattle, WA. I am also a board member of the Seattle City of Literature, an organization that manages public and private partnerships, both within our city and abroad, to grow and promote a robust creative economy. I also created my own organization called the Seattle Urban Book Expo, our goal is to cultivate a POC literary community influenced by events, education, and opportunities of entrepreneurship within the book publishing industry. My connection with the communities of this challenge is we both share the goals of creating an educational environment where we both utilize story-telling.

Hello Itika,

I thought about ways to increase engagement, and one solution I thought of was to make the illustrations highlight the animal noises, by spelling it out as the animal says it.
