The youngest children are the center of the universe and their family members talk to them about what interests both the child and adult. The book will spark many conversations through reading or just by playing together and talking. The book is intended for diverse families. There are two mommies and daddies in the book which could either be the result of divorce of same sex marriages.

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

Babies understand language well before they begin speaking. In recent studies babies even can tell parent's voices prior to being born. While the majority of the words in this book are simple Tier 1 books, the pictures and repetition will help children learn important reading skills as well as bond with their caregivers. Part of my intent of including so many relatives in the book is the hope that many of those relatives will recognize themselves and read to their own baby, including older siblings and aunts and uncles. Perhaps they will even say, “that’s me, I’m your brother,” for example. The language is very repetitious with the same number of syllables and rhymes to help the youngest readers learn and be able to predict and repeat what happens on each page.

Please describe any familiarity you may have with Philadelphia and its residents? (optional question)

I’ve enjoyed visits to this wonderful city and the state of Pennsylvania. While I was born and raised in Denver, I’ve traveled and lived in many cities similar to Philadelphia. I was a teacher as well in inner city Denver and have some insight into the at-risk children and caregivers this contest and many authors are trying to reach.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

The language in this book is meant to be accessible to all children, but specifically urban ones. The characters include the most common family immediate members (brother, sister, father, mother, uncle, aunt, grandma and grandpa), Within the exception of cows, all objects and activities are something found or done in an urban area (at home or in a park).

Rick has over 20+ years of international education administration and teaching, curriculum design, data analysis and programming, business development, and writing achievements, including the picture book, Dirty Birdy Feet. Before joining Early Childhood Council Leadership Alliance, he was a Curriculum Specialist for the Peace Corps in the Department of Education in Micronesia. Rick is passionate about early childhood learning, helping early learning professionals, increasing access to comprehensive health care and mental health services, and providing families with meaningful community and parenting supports. He is a native of Colorado and has traveled extensively through many countries in the world. As an education advocate, he has served as a middle and high school teacher, elementary school principal, head principal in China, volunteer in schools in India, Board of Education member in Clear Creek County. He is a proud parent to two grown children.

I would assume that this would be a board book with a picture of each relative talking to baby about items in a home (shoes, dream=bed), outside/park (cars, trees, bees, streams, stars), or on a farm (cows).
