Emma Makes A Friend
How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)
I've read some of the research provided and have in the past read a course in children's clinical psychology. But above all, it was watching my daughter's development - teaching her to read and tell stories that that informed and inspired the shape, approach and story.
Please describe any familiarity you may have with Philadelphia and its residents? (optional question)
None beyond the obvious historic facts and research consumed in the context of this project.
How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)
Going through suggested sources, I was amazed (and somewhat surprised) by the diversity of Philadelphia's population. Therefore, I've decided to make Emma's friends representative of the major ethnic groups living in the city and fill picnic's menu with dishes of their national cuisines. In hope that familiarity with other children's cultures will make young readers more tolerant and curious leading to making friends in real life.

I'm a brand specialist, bringing up a five-year-old in London. As a matter of research I've read about Philadelphians, watched the videos and first spent some time thinking about writing something very relevant to the narrow audience. But then it felt forced - at the end of the day, Philadelphians I've read about are really not that different from the Londoners or Berliners I know. Therefore, I decided to write a book about kindness, curiosity, wrapped in a sense of adventure. Something I'd read my daughter - when she was a little younger.
