BUBBLES

Through using a universally loved activity, this story will help children relate to their own environment and take them beyond.

I love blowing bubbles.

They float up in the breeze.

They go up over bridges

And high above the trees.


They soar up over playgrounds

And glide above the schools.

They float up over churches

And bright blue swimming pools.


They go beyond tall buildings

With cars and trucks below.

The view is always changing

The farther up they go.


They float beyond the city

Where the color's mostly green,

As barns and cows and sheep and fields

Help to fill the scene.


Bubbles are amazing.

They're oval or they're round.

Whether moving fast or slow,

They do not make a sound.


I wish I were a bubble.

It would be so grand.

I'd sail up over water

And float above the land.


If I were a bubble

I'll tell you what I'd do,

I'd float around the sky above

Then drift right back to you! 

Describe the intended vision for your early childhood book manuscript in 1-2 sentences

By using the much loved activity of blowing bubbles, I hope to engage the imagination of both the child and caregiver while also providing opportunity for both attachment between them and increased vocabulary building.

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

Much research has shown that using rhyme contributes not only to a child's ability to articulate words but helps them develop stronger listening skills essential for brain development and memory. It also enhances their predictive abilities. Many years of working with very young children has absolutely shown me this is true. This manuscript lends itself to such growth and development. I believe that it is imperative that we provide children with language experiences that encourage curiosity and creativity. We can do this by taking children from what they know to experiences less familiar to them and that is what this book is intended to do.

Please describe any familiarity you may have with Philadelphia and its residents? (optional question)

I have visited Philadelphia several times and have much enjoyed the city as well as its history.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

I carefully crafted this story by starting it in an urban setting (tall buildings, bridges, cars, trucks, etc.). I think this will create a comfortable feeling both for the caregiver and the child. I also wanted to provide opportunity for expansion by including "barns, cows, fields" in order to expand vocabulary.

After living in many different areas of the United States, I have recently relocated to the central highlands area of Prescott Valley. I previously lived in Illinois, Massachusetts, Iowa, Texas and Minnesota. I have experienced living in both urban and rural communities.

Tell us more about you / your team

My background is education. I have a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Early Childhood. I taught both second and fifth grades before moving to early childhood. My early childhood experience has been working within our school district with children and their parents through home visits. For twenty two years I worked with children prenatally through age five. I retired a few years ago. For the last fourteen years I have been a national trainer with Parents As Teachers. I have written two story books focused on children P-3 and have done several workshops for professionals and parents on how to encourage literacy in young children.

Provide an example visual identity for a look and feel you might like to achieve. ( (optional question, 3-5 visuals)

The illustrations would be very important to this book...as they are in any early childhood book. I would love to work with an illustrator to develop engaging, creative illustrations which would draw both the child and the caregiver into the story.
