A young spider seeks a place to call home — if he can survive long enough to reach it.

Padawa needed a home.


He walked and walked as much as he could.

He found a house!

Must be good.


He spun around to make his web.

Then whack went a broom on his head.


“Spider! Spider! A scary, hairy spider!”

Padawa jumped across the floor

ran over the table,

and out the door.


He walked and walked as much as he could.

He found a car!

Must be good.


He spun around to make his web.

Then whack went a shoe on his head.


“Spider! Spider! A scary, hairy spider!”

Padawa jumped across the floor

ran over the chair,

and out the door.


He walked and walked as much as he could.

He found a park!

Must be good.


He spun around to make his web.

Then whack went a stick on his head.


“Spider! Spider! A scary, hairy spider!”

Padawa jumped across the floor

ran over the slide,

and out the —


Oh no!

Where can he go?


Padawa looked at the boy. The boy looked at Padawa.

He took Padawa to a big, oak tree,

opened his hands and set him free.


Padawa climbed as high as he could.

And found a branch!

It was good.

How has this book been informed by early childhood language development research and evidence? (response minimum 250 Characters)

The repetition in both the scenarios and sentences, coupled with rhyme, helps establish early connections critical to the development of children (ages 0-3). Using language that can be easily read aloud, it is fun to read on repeat (because we know children love to read the same book again and again!) As the children and caregivers experience the story with Padawa, they can point out the different aspects of a neighborhood (houses, cars, parks, people etc), increasing vocabulary and sense of awareness to their surroundings. Milestones of Early Literary Development and Don't Ask Me Where I'm From, Ask Me Where I'm Local were influencers for this text.

How have you crafted this manuscript to resonate with and/or reflect the experiences of those living in urban contexts? (optional question)

With 15% of Philidelphia residents born abroad, caregivers can help children develop empathy for those who are new or different in their lives, like the boy who chose to help the spider instead of hurting him. Padawa's journey to find a home is also a journey of acceptance, a narrative that will resonate with children, families, and caregivers.

I love the imagery you chose and the last line, "What a view!" Nice sense of conflict and resolution.
