Self-employment Scheme for Needy PWDs & Their Guardians through the Co-operative
Capacity building & income generation for 100 PWDs & guardians in Kathmandu Valley via self-help groups & building savings & credit habits
What problem does your idea solve?
Government surveys finds 25.16% of the population lives below the poverty line (200,000 of those people live in Kathmandu valley). Of the total population 2% (513,321 people) have a disability. UNICEF shows that 70% of PWDs do not have honorable living, 80% are financially dependent on family & 83.7% of PWDs are unemployed. These figures highlight the highest number of PWDs in Nepal are in an extreme condition of poverty and are deprived of the privileges provided by the state.
Explain your idea
Background: NSD will execute the programme through NSDMC and will specifically carry out the activities of capacity enhancement of selected PWDs and their guardians in running their own Income Generating Activities (IGAs) through formation and operation of self-help groups, development of saving and credit habits.
Major Activities Include:
1. Selection and Orientations on the Cooperative Schemes
2. Training on Selection and Management of Business/Ventures
3. Management of Seed Money for the Self-employment Venture
4. Saving Collection, Management and Monitoring of the Business/Venture
Sustainability of the Programme: This programme has been designed following the principles of cooperative. It has given high priority to the deprived/marginalized PWDs and their guardians. Through this project, those selected PWDs or their guardians will be provided seed money as a loan, with a minimum interest rate, to run their business ventures like small shops or roadside-vending stalls, etc. By running such micro-enterprises they will return the money with interest to NSDMC, which will again invested to the other needy PWDs in a rotational basis, this process will be continued.
Based on the current consultation with the target beneficiaries, we aim to support 100 PWDs & guardians (40% female) from Kathmandu valley that fall below the poverty line. This has adversely affected their children’s education & health. As they are scattered in different areas in Kathmandu valley, they are not united for their rights & lack access to financial institutions & better livelihood opportunities. They are also not fully aware about the government’s free services & entitlements.
How is your idea unique?
NSD aims to ensure justice to the PWDs pursuant to the right based & need based approaches through capacity building, promoting interfaces & linkages, national & international advocacy. NSD built a nationwide network with concerned groups to mobilize self-help organizations at local level & to encourage their participation in a wider awareness movement with the goal of rights-based and need-based approach.
The specific reasons behind implementing this programme within the Kathmandu valley are to:
• Increase access of the PWDs & guardians scattered in different areas of Kathmandu valley to financial institutions & livelihood opportunities
• Support & enhance living conditions of the PWDs & guardians who are unemployed even after receiving the income generating trainings from various other organizations due to the lack of capital or seed money
• Develop & retain the NSDMC established by the PWDs as a credible institution providing financial services to PWDs & their guardians
