What problem does your idea solve?

They are faced with stigmatization, discrimination & are being marginalized, 97% of graduate from the school for the deaf end up not gaining admission to the university, polytechnic or the technical college & in school they are not been trained in life skills to start a business when the need arises, they end up on the street begging, faced with poor healthcare to lack of vocational life skills & jobs. We want to empower them with photography & ICT Skills to set up a business & be self reliance.

Explain your idea

An Intensive Photography and ICT training for the final year students of the Ibadan school for the deaf , to empower them , because we believe by allowing them the freedom to use their creativity, it will give them a voice that would otherwise go unheard . They will be introduced to different techniques essential in ICT and photography, they would be familiarized with other ICT experts, photographers and artists, as well as creative businessmen and women for inspiration. In addition, they would also be taught how to use computer technology to edit and upload their images onto the internet for exposure. We want to empower them, build their confidence, self-esteem and open a new world for them to visualize and create. And provide an environment that is educational, fun, motivating, challenging and engaging for them to learn and grow. At the end of the training all the equipment used for the training would be handed over to the principal and the students of the Institute to manage. And best images produced during the training will be exhibited in the hall of the Institution and the general public, students and the press will be invited to view and buy so that the children can take pride in their work and see an end result as they have it displayed. As agreed with the principal, the children would become the official event photographer and computer operator for their institution, the position would be compensated for sustainability of the project.

Who benefits?

50 final year student of the Ibadan school for the deaf between the age of 16 to 24 years old, will be trained & mentored in photography and ICT , they would be trained to start their own business and to train others. Also, I & my team wants to use this project to create awareness & call the attention of the policy makers&the general public & the press to the plight of the physically challenged people in Nigeria.

How is your idea unique?

In Ibadan the Nseabasi Photography Concept is the only organization doing such project. My last year project themed Camera for Change , a photography and computer training for children in the Juvenile Correctional Institution Ibadan, which serves as a detention center for children that have committed delinquent acts. In this institution, youth with a troubled past are trained to become useful members of society. For the camera for change project I was awarded the FEARLESSLY INSPIRATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS AWARD, this prestigious award is giving to photographers who are making a difference in their communities through services, donations, or organization. I and my team have the required experience to carry out this new project successfully. Hi Nseabasi,

I love your idea of using photography and computer training to empower the students of Ibadan School for the deaf. I am reminded of a recent article I read locally about a young man with disabilities that opened up his own photography studio and used it as a space to express himself while also being able to make a living off of his artwork. There is no greater way to connect with others than through art. Best of luck with your project!
