What problem does your idea solve?

Mental health of a person impacts not just himself, but also the people around him. Caregivers/Guardians and patients find it difficult to accept the disease and manage it . Care takers find it difficult whom to approach and trust when they face day to day issues . In developing countries, there is dearth of psychologists and psychiatrists. In addition, it is out of reach of people with economic background. This mobile app provides them platform to seek help and share experiences.

Explain your idea

This mobile app based online social network provides a platform especially to caretakers of people with poor cognitive/ mental health to seek help on different issues. Some of issues include Diagnosis of mental health issues, Acceptance of the mental health issue Treatment Medicine Withdrawal issues How to overcome stigma, attitude of society towards your own mental health It would be focused online social network which would consist of doctors, psychotherapists, health coaches, behavior change experts, alternative medicine doctors, patients and their caregivers. People would share mental health issues with experts. Experts would provide them recommendations . Patients and their guardians can share their own experiences. One of the best use case can be how they overcome stigma associated with taking medicine for mental disorder. How they benfitted from taking medicines? What would have happened if they did not take medical help due to associated stigma? Second use case - one of the greatest challenge is to accept mental illness , and take a loved one to doctor . People can share how they encouraged the patient to goto doctor. Did they ask doctor for home visit , what was the reaction of patient when doctor visited ? How they encouraged a person to accept his mental illness and seek professional help Third use case can be how alternative treatments like naturopathy, yoga can be used in conjuction with allopathic medicin

Who benefits?

This idea would be beneficial to 1. Patients 2. Doctors 3. patients with mental illness 4. Their caretakers 5. All the people around who get affected 6. Hospitals in reaching out to greater number of patients It would be beneficial to children, elderly ,women and people with disabilities in developing countries where mental healthcare is expensive and reaches only a few . More than 50% of population suffers from one or other form of mental illness during his or her lifetime.

How is your idea unique?

Though there are many mobile apps, there are a very few online social networks focused on patients with mental disabilities and their caretakers. This would be a trustworthy online social network where advice would be given by experts. Patients and their caretakers would share their experiences and online social network managers would curate these experiences . There are organizations such as lybrate, practo, ehealth implementing this idea. However, they are platform for doctors. This would be a mobile app based social network for people with mental health disabilities and their caretakers. In developing countries like India, there is dearth of platform where people and caretakers can discuss issues. There is lot of stigma associated with mental health problems and it is the biggest barrier for its treatment. This platform would be good catalyst to help people accept their illness and manage it . I have been a software developer, did MBA and Phd on social networks

I am a researcher working on trust in health social networks, would like to collaborate with research organizations/universities working with different software development companies on similar issues.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

One of the major issues in treatment of mental issues is associated stigma, It takes a long time for a person to accept his mental illiness. Stigma is more of social issue rather than a personal issue, we would need help from different researchers to develop framework to reduce this stigma and to motivate people to take treatment inspite of this stigma,

I like where you are heading with this... is there a way to capitalize on the way in which most people, especially young people are using apps to access information and be part of communities. For your idea, could you have an app where a person in need of mental health help could throw it out there to mental health processionals who are also part of app. More specifically, if you need to talk through an issue, you log on, say "I need Help" and someone comes to your rescue. Kind of like when you are on a website and do a live chat.

Heather is your idea a violation of th HIPAA act?

Though there are lot of social networks, their is dearth of trusted health social networks . Making an app/software platform is very easy . What is difficult is getting trust of different stakeholder. For trust, We need to network of health professionals who can answer the queries. In addition, we need community managers who could curate the content posted by different patients and their caregivers

For developing countries, we need trust and not HIPAA act.
