LingvoHelp app can help blind and visually impaired people learn foreign languages via live video thanks to bilingual volunteers tutors.
What problem does your idea solve?
LingvoHelp is able to let blind and visually impaired people learn foreign languages in free-barrier environment, have access to quality and inclusive education and special innovative methodology in language learning based on audio perception. The project can help millions of people with disabilities and foster the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal N.4 (quality and inclusive education) and Global Goal N.9 (fostering innovation).
Explain your idea
The app is rather simple for blind and visually impaired people to use.
First, a blind person creates a profile in the LingvoHelp app to learn a foreign language signed by a bilingual volunteer tutor as his/her mother tongue.
Then a bilingual volunteer tutor creates a profile in the app by filling his/her application form (Inc. languages knowledge, education, professional or volunteer experience and additional skills) to help the blind person learn a foreign language and acquire teaching skills in a live video.
The app creates two databases:
1) blind students database indicating their mother tongue and a language they want to learn;
2) bilingual volunteers tutors database indicating their mother tongue and a language they want to teach.
After creating a profile and adding information on which languages a student speaks and which language he/she wants to learn, a student is waiting for the volunteer tutor’s call to get to know each other and discuss the course programme based on 3 linguistic aspects (speaking, vocabulary and grammar training).
After filling the application form a volunteer tutor gives a video call in the app, speaks to his/her student, and makes the course programme related to the blind person’s language knowledge level for teaching.
Blind and visually impaired people of different ages, genders and nationalities can benefit from LingvoHelp app due to its simplicity. The project is related both to people with disabilities since they can be qualified as 'LingvoHelp' students and sighted bilingual volunteers willing to be tutors. Our first users will be informed about the project launch via such a popular youth network as HeySuccess cooperating with more than 1,000,000 users all over the world.
How is your idea unique?
The idea is unique, since it represents a mutual help both to people with disabilities who can learn foreign languages in free barrier environment and help volunteers tutors develop their teaching skils at the same time.
It also can help break the stereotype on blind and vision impaired people's helplessness, as they play a significant role in young volunteers' professional skills development thanks to LingvoHelp app.
My mentors and referees are Hans Jørgen Wiberg, Founder of Be My Eyes and Esuna Dugarova, Research Fellow at UN Headquarters and I also cooperate with HeySuccess youth organization which helps me promote LingvoHelp project and foster its development.
Tell us more about you
Being an interpreter, tutor and youth activist prompted me to foster the achievement of SDGs and I hope to realize this thanks to 'LingvoHelp' project which will be presented at Sustainable Development Youth Action Forum 2017 in Serbia and International Student Week in Ilmenau, Germany.
What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?
At the moment we are looking for funding opportunities for app developers to create LingvoHelp app available on iOS and Android platforms. We also empower activists across the world who can foster the project development by joining bilingual volunteers tutors team or sharing the opportunity with their friends the app to help blind and visually impaired people reveal their potential and learn a foreign language in free barrier environment.
I hope my presentation at Sustainable Development Youth Action Forum 2017 which will be held in Belgrade and at Ilmenau University of Technology in Germany will let me promote the innovation and empower youth to join bilingual volunteers tutors team fostering the achievement of SDGs
