Education and awareness-the first step towards change.
Illiteracy, a facet of life persons with disabilities are conditioned to can be ameliorated through public enlightenment.
What problem does your idea solve?
The basic challenge persons with disabilities are generally confronted with is survival. We live in a world where employers of labour detest the sight of such people and therefore, are given to street begging as a last resort to survive. Adequate enlightenment on the need for the public to see such persons as equal human beings and provision of educational and vocational trainings fosters opportunities and reduces stigma. Also, training of health personal will go a long way.
Explain your idea
Disability varies among people, and various advancements in technology have provided several assistive devices-my Bionic Brain, BioZen etc for cognitive impairment, prosthetics and automated wheelchairs etc for physical impairment and therapy-which have proven highly effective in developed countries but where the is little or no knowledge on how to use these devices by such persons not to talk of the availability of such and lack of prowess on the part of health personnel who take care of persons with psychosocial and psychological disorders in cases where some devices are available, little or no progress is made. However, if such knowledge and training is provided to these health persons, who in turn, help beneficiaries learn how to use these devices, persons with disabilities can be able to appreciate socialservices, learn effectively in an educational institution, and where adequate means is provided, get economic inclusion.
Everyone benefits; imagine a scenario where persons with disabilities have adequate access to socialservices and can easily access these devices, there is independence, education opportunities and creativity. Due to the availability of adequate transportation, there is job creation for the unemployed, death by vehicles on the road due to street begging and assult of persons with disability is curtailed, and to top it all, a drastic reduction of discrimination.
How is your idea unique?
The nuances with this idea is that several bodies may have setup organizations and where services are made available but no proper assessment and training is done on how effectively, health personnel can teach the beneficiaries how to utilize such . For instance, Certified psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners (CPRPs) are clinicians whose goal is to “enable individuals to compensate for the functional deficits, interpersonal barriers and environmental barriers created by the disability and to restore ability for independent living, socialization and effective life management” (Hughes, 2003). These practitioners work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, institutions, and mental health clinics, and work with a variety of people who have coexisting psychiatric disabilities, substance abuse and physical and social difficulties. This is not the case here and, people tend to abandorn these devices. In cases of physical disabilities, even with such, illiteracy is still eminent.
Tell us more about you
An individual with concern for change. This idea for sure, holds so much opportunities for a country such as mine only if it can be put to action. It is said "the best gift you can give a child is education". I'm ready to devote my time to see that this idea becomes a reality. If this body can come to a understanding with the government on the need for compulsory education of persons with disabilities, and adequate training of our health personnel, change of thinking amongst such is paramount.
What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?
That would be how this idea can be brought to light; who would see to it that socialservices is made for all;who would be able to bring this ideas to the authorities and ensure that there is a new song on the lips of persons with disabilities in the country?.
