What problem does your idea solve?

Stigma is one of the worst problem people with disabilities face. As a result of that, about 60 to 70% of people with disabilities have no job . This project involve creating job center for people with disabilities which include skill training, interview services & other support services. This project is expected to train people with disabilities in a way that they become employable & well positioned in the labour market. Public shall be enlightened on stigmatization of people with disabilities.

Explain your idea

Through the establishment of job placement center, people with disabilities will have opportunity to access: skill training/ mentorship program, interview services and other support services. The job center will maintain the data base of people with disabilities so as to make information available and place them for job opportunities. The purpose of this project is to design and implement a job center hub cum skill training/mentoring program aimed to help people with disabilities to secure job, develop their skill and help them in their career development. Those that are not employable may have to register for four weeks course in order to position them in labor market and become employable.
Guildance Community Development Foundation’s representative is going to works with people with disabilities to provide job leads and help with interview skills. Our staff in charge will work with them, rehabilitate and find suitable occupations and vocational opportunities. Placement officer will also help graduates among them to secure internships, work-study opportunities and part-time employment.

Who benefits?

The beneficiaries of this project are 5,000 people with disabilities like deaf, dumb, blind etc & family who are between the ages of 18-30 years in Nigeria in the next 5 years. For example Mr Mudashiru Adam, 39 years in Iwo, Nigeria will register with community job placement centre so as to be equipped with information about job openings & finally offer him job to take care of his family. Disabilities people will also have access to health welfare (physiotherapy, drugs etc) through this project

How is your idea unique?

This is an innovative project for people with disability & family through skill training & so on, hereby provide means of living to take care of their families. GCDF already have the database of unemployed graduate among the physically challenge people in Iwoland while we are currently planning to expand the same exercise to other parts of Nigeria. We are currently working among the physically challenged people including those living in the marginalised, disadvantaged and difficult terrain in the last 24 months. This community job placement center if sees the light of the day will be first community job center for people with disabilities in Nigeria. In the next 12 months of this project,about 100 people with disabilities will be able to find decent work, train in vocations, get hired & thrive in the workforce with equal pay with their counterparts. We are reaching out to 5 Millions people directly through our model-advocacy to reduce stigmatization of disabilities people in 5 years .

Tell us more about you

I am a community developer base in Nigeria and Founder/ President General of Guildance Community Development Foundation. Mr Stephen Ohuneni, Mrs Ganiyat Wakilat Aderonke and Mr Ayokunle Dickson of Guildance Community Development Foundation will work with me on this project. We are looking for an Information Technology company with experience in working with people with disabilities to partner with us especially in provision of devices that will assist in imparting skill, audio materials & so on.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

1. We are yet to factor into this project how to train people with disabilities with special need for example intellectual impairment?
2. To what extent is our existing customer service center capable of assisting people with disabilities?
3. How to best design promotion material such that target beneficiaries (people with disabilities) respond to it?
4.What will be the best ways to adapt the programme so that it is replicable across Nigeria?
5. Which training methods will be the most cost effective and lead to sustainable outcomes for people with disabilities?
6. How can we create virality by designing easy ways to share this project through social media and incentivising referrals?

How has your idea changed based on feedback?

Feedback
1. People with disabilities said if their health welfare (physiotherapy, Drugs etc) can also be included they would be glad, saying most of them need to take care of their health which stands in the way of achieving this good feat they are about to enjoy.
2. They also suggested that there should be counselling and education for them because some of them are being victimized and taken advantage of, due to their vulnerability.
 What needs further investigation?
Incorporating health welfare to the idea of empowerment needs more investigation as well as the technicalities involved in transforming this idea to a reality.

What Next
1. We would make provision for purchasing vocational tools for them after successful completion of the training.
2. A section of the job Centre will be involved in counselling and education of the people with disabilities.
3. We would add rehabilitation facilities for those that needs it via our partner NDE

Who will implement this idea?

This project will be headed by Mr Adisa Kabiru & implemented by our strategic staff and operating team, totaling 10-12 people beginning in 2018. Our staff (Nigerian, based in Nigeria will work full time): Mr Stephen Ohuneni (Director of Programme), Mrs Ganiyu Wakilat (Community Mobilisation Director) (Customer Care) Blessing O. & Mr Daramola Ayokunle (Program Officer). Hires will include Technical Director, Training officers, Human Resources Manager, M & E officer, Nurse & Accountant

Using a human-centered design approach, you may uncover insights that lead to small or foundational changes to your organization’s existing strategy or processes in order to unlock the potential of your idea. How would your organization go about making such changes?

Big decision were made by board of trustees during the board meetings. Purchase Orders are generally used for the procurement of all goods.
The following people are involve in procurement:
1.Executive Director, or the head of department or his or her delegate or budget holder
2. The Procurement Officer invites and obtains tenders from at least three (3) prospective suppliers who meet the technical requirements and are on the approved vendor list.
3. A copy of the issued and approved purchase order is sent to accounts department.
4. A copy is also sent to the stores department
5. The Administrative Officer is then informed of the delivery of the item(s) so that it can be added to the inventory in the case of equipment.

What is it that most attracted you to Amplify instead of a more traditional funding model?

Human-Centered Design Mindsets attracts us most. We assumed to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within the other person's frame of reference. In fact we put ourselves in another's position, in this case, the stigma & non-inclusion faced by people with disabilities.
Our team were also attracted and embraced the possibility and zeal as we started from a place of not knowing the answer to the problem we are looking to solve. It is the source of our joy to make it happen.

What challenges do your end-users face? (1) What is the biggest challenge that your end-users face on a day-to-day, individual level? (2) What is the biggest systems-level challenge that affects your end-users?

People with Disabilities 1: She is not computer literate but with the help our experience facilitator, she find it easy the second day.
People with Disabilities 2: He is new to the aptitude test, the guidance book was given which she studied for three days. She is now conversant with aptitude test.
 People with Disabilities 3: He studied Accounting but no knowledge of Microsoft office & accounting software (Excel, word & PowerPoint ). One of our Trainer who is Certified (Chartered) dedicated 5 working days to him. He is now an average users of Microsoft & software.
Our human resources processes are new to people with disabilities (Job Process).
The human resources rescued the situation by simplifying the human resources processes with one on one assistance to people with disabilities.

Tell us about your vision for this project: (1) share one sentence about the impact you would like to see from this project in five years and (2) what is the biggest question you need to answer to get there?

IMPACT: To reduce the stigmatization by 80% by the 2022, reaching 5 Millions people directly through our model (advocacy) & improve the inclusion of people with disabilities in Nigeria through skill training, mentorship and interview services to 5,000 people with disabilities.
QUESTION: Can this Idea be sustained to have a long term-impact in order to achieve our Vision for 2022: We conduct a survey, to determine the readiness of the communities and partners to sustain the idea for a long-term
