What problem does your idea solve?

The app developed by "Accessible?" (www.accessapp.info) aims to map and rate places according to accessibility criteria, in order to make easy to research for accessible places and what adaptations they have.
I knew about this startup as I was woking on a similar idea (currently on pause) last year and could talk with its founder, Nadine. I really believe on this idea.

Explain your idea

Imagine a person who has a disability travelling and going out. How to arrive in the destination? Does the transport/street/venue,etc. have the adaptations he/she needs? In such cases, access to reliable and accurate information is more critical for the decision-making process on a purchase and visit.

Who benefits?

People with disabilities who want an independent daily life

How is your idea unique?

The idea of "Accessible?" address the challenge to offer detailed information for persons with disabilities and give them space for rate places according to accessibility criteria.
One thing is the venue post pictures that not always coincide with the reality, plus mentioning to be accessible without any proper adaptation. Another thing is when users with any disability can rate a venue and indicate for their peers and social circles.

Tell us more about you

I'm André, student at Kaospilots Switzerland. Currently in South Africa working on 2 design thinking projects (recycling and low-income housing)
I'm in to develop similar ideas to this app and I'm looking for partners, especially on IT!

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

How to get into the niche of people with disabilities?
How to provide information about accessible places globally?

Where will your idea be implemented?

  • South Africa

Experience in Implementation Country(ies)

  • Yes, for less than one year.

Expertise in Sector

  • I've worked in a sector related to my idea for less than a year.

Organizational Status

This is now the third similar idea here as well as my own. This means it is really very necessary service for disabled people. I wonder how we can all collaborate albeit in different parts of the continent?

Hi @Fadila Lagadien, I'll take a look in your idea. What help do you need? What collaboration do you have in mind?

Hi Andre, Fadila Lagadien and Conor

Have you heard of "Our City Love"? This is a model that was posted in the research phase of the Fall Prevention Challenge. This start up hires people with disabilities to collect and share information about accessible restaurants via mobile and cloud technology. Maybe some learnings here?

This video shares the full scope of what Our City Love social enterprise is doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si8lAhnjqfg

Hi Andre, Fadila Lagadien and Conor.

Here is a link to their Facebook Page as well. https://www.facebook.com/OurCityLove/
I think the model is interesting as they are partnering with a variety of organizations as shared on their video.

Andre,
I was thinking of collaboration in the sense of App development since I am not technically equipped:-) and we have similar ideas.

Hi Fadila Lagadien I've been also struggling on the development of the app, that's why I paused it for a while. I'm looking for alternatives to mockup and prototype on low-cost.

Thanks Chong-Wey Lin for your contact! I've already sent you an email. What could help Our City Love?

Andre, it seems we are in the same boat in both respects. If I get something done sooner than you I will share and if you get it sooner then share with me. I am asking others around my hometown too.

Welcome Chong-Wey and Our City of Love! During the research phase of The Fall Prevention Challenge (a separate challenge on this OpenIDEO site) Kate Rushton  posted about your work, sharing it with the community. I remembered that post and shared it with Fadila and Andre in a comment here as they are discussing how to develop very similar ideas. Happy to see you have connected with them here! City of Love is inspiring!
