What problem does your idea solve?

Poverty confront PWDs in Tanzania, many live-in charity mentalities and considered victims, helpless object of pity or sympathy. They’ve been taught aid provisions are the only quick solutions to their difficulties. This brings us to think about Stigma Elimination that contribute to economic inclusion for the quality of life of PWDs using SEED-SCALE, ICT and SHG as mechanisms to re-learn about human energy, behavior change, local reality and partnership for an effective economic inclusion.

Explain your idea

It appears that Self Help Groups (SHG) and Information Communication Technology like Mobile phones calls, Short Message Service (SMS), computer use, internet and Open source software like (FrontlineSMS) to be an entry point in the process of eliminating stigma towards People with disabilities (PWD) by providing them with unprecedented levels of access to education, skills as well as the opportunity to participate in the economic, cultural and social life of their community. TDRCT aims to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities in the community, to demand for their rights, defend themselves from exploitations and involve local leaders, service providers accountable to their rights, by creating 300 SHG of PWD with approximately 25 members in each group in 2 districts. People with disabilities community mobilizers shall be selected in collaboration with Disabled People Organizations, Local government leaders. Groups will be initially trained on disability rights, ICT use, Village Loan Saving Associations and SEED-SCALE theory. After 6 months of engaging in Village savings and loans (VICOBA), groups shall be trained on financial literacy and entrepreneurship then members will be invited in Revolving and Saving Association to grow their business idea and pay back the amount with an interest of 1% per month while preparing them to linkage with other financial institutions and banks. Generated interest shall be used for project administration to scale up the idea.

Who benefits?

Our goal is to impact the whole community. Of course, PWD who are trained and placed in SHG are directly impacted. So, we can say that PWD are the biggest beneficiaries of TDRCT work. However, for a purpose of ensuring inclusion the non-disabled will be include, after inclusion in SHG of PWD for those who do not have a disability will serve as inspiration for everyone around disability, showing the benefits of diversity.

How is your idea unique?

We use SEED-SCALE theory as methodology and emphasize interdependence since, as human being “we all have times when we feel discouraged and need the support of others. Teams works like SHG can give that support, along with a diversity of skills, perspectives and personal networks, enabling individual efforts to be greatly magnified. Thus, our initiative is cost effective, scalable and inclusive model which can assist PWDs to be community change agents through locally advocacy led initiatives); voluntary and loan saving methodology; Revolving loan as transitional step to formal financial linkage for emerging entrepreneurs to access more capital ,expand their business); mentorship as well community engage (create supportive environment by welcoming none disabled into SHG to build their understanding on issues affecting PWD). We are reaching highly discriminated population by current development partners. We are PWDs ourselves empowering PWDs and the general community at large.

Tell us more about you

Tusaidiane Disability Resources and Charity Organization of Tanzania (TDRCT) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and a cross-disability organization. This means it is made up of people with all kinds of disabilities and non-disabled people who advocate and offer services on behalf of people with disability. TDRCT informs and advocates for the participation of people with disabilities in the design and implementation of policies and programs in Tanzania.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

1. Behavior change of PWDs; To get them to believe they CAN DO, join SHG, accept their difference, and learn to do things differently using their diversity ability and believing themselves that they have the equal participation in social and economic development in the family, society and the community level. 2. Community engagement and Stakeholders support to make this idea possible; the project need fund, technical support on how to train PWDs to use SEED-SCALE, ICT equipment and accessories and influence in PWDs involvement in the community decision making processes. 3. To use of technology for inclusion by giving all people the skills and knowledge, as well as implementing UNCRPD by learning in detail about law and advocating process

So to strengthen your idea I think you need to better define your target audience. For example, the kinds of SHG's you would do with persons with intellectual disabilities would be very different than those you would conduct with persons with sensory impairments or a physical disability. I understand the theory behind the work you want to do but am concerned about its implementation and how it would be executed if it continues to be so broad.

Alexis, you gave an excellent and unique reflection on my idea of defining my target audiences as People with disability are not homogeneous they are heterogeneous,
In fact, my focus is to build an inclusive society, therefore my audience include PWDs and non-disabled, to start as a process of planting a seed I want to focus in 2 district of Nyamagana and Ilemela and in each I will select 15 wards making a total of 30 ward and from there I can initiate a process of forming 10 SHG.
Each district will be represented with participants 150 making a total of 300 people as members of five different SHG each district from 30 wards of these two district, participants will include People with disabilities and non-disabled people who advocate and offer services on behalf of People with disability such as family members, parents, guardian and caregiver especially for the side of representing the views of children with disability and persons with intellectual disabilities, this process will act as an avenue for PWDs to use and exercise their human energy as well as those representatives will get a chance of observing the diversity of ability of PWDs, this observation will act as a mechanism of using this non-disabled people as good ambassadors to the rest of the community to rethink to work away with stigma towards PWDs, this can lead to other raising aspirations like encouraged the community to educate parents of children with disability about the importance of education particularly to children with disabilities, the government to observe implement and respect the UNCRPD and disability act among other.
These SHG can act as learning point and this is where the SEED-SCALE Curriculum will be employed, as a SEED and then in the long run can lead to scale up at SCALE. The ICT can act as a tool of bridging the gap keeping data and facilitating the organization process.
To implement it, we are going to start as a Rotating and Saving Association (ROSCA), as we know people need money to improve their quality of life from their we can come with our SEED-SCLE theory to remind them to discover to use their resources available in the community and to understanding their success, rather than focusing on problem, problem are endless, even the richest have problem, if we focus on problem we cannot move far away if we use our energy and available resource we are going to discover a lot of opportunities!
Your ideas are appreciated as we need more guidance on this to keep on improving, diversity kind of ideas is what we need now to keep on moving and improving our weakness point of view.
