What problem does your idea solve?

The idea seeks to address the challenges of access to, and accessibility of facilities and services in South Africa by disabled people, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People With Disabilities (UNCRPD), and in particular with Article 9 / Accessibility.

Explain your idea

The purpose and service of Beaccessible not a new idea but is new in South Africa. It is a Universal Design Tool that will assist disabled consumers to plan outings. The App will give information gathered on user experience regarding access to, and the accessibility of the venue using a Google Maps-style GPS map interface indicating the location of accessible facility or service. The service will rely heavily on users to rate, verify, or add new facilities and or services with the option to add comments. The App will allow the user of a facility or service to rate it and will be published to the general public who will be able to choose based on these ratings. The facility owner and or service provider will be informed of the rating and if it is negative, can choose to reverse the rating by using the Tool developed by Beaccessible. The Tool conducts an accessibility audit of any facility or service and is in the form of a checklist that has been prepared as single units that make up the whole. This means that it can be used to audit a whole building from outside to inside or, it can be used to audit as single area, i.e. an entrance. Anyone is able to conduct such audits if you use the Tool because it is simple and easy to use. A web site is up but further work needs to be done by developing an App on which consumers can comment on facilities & services based on personal experience. In doing this facility owners will use the Tool and implement the published suggestions.

Who benefits?

The Tool is an App that will be downloaded free on a smart phone and used by any technically literate person anywhere in South Africa. The users can rate any public facility & or service based on personal experience for ease of use. The published results can be used by anyone to plan an outing or trip that will be accessible to them. The beneficiaries will be disabled people, mothers with children and older persons. The clients will be the owners of any public facility and or service.

How is your idea unique?

The service of Beaccessible is not a new idea but is new in South Africa. It is a Universal Design Tool that will assist disabled consumers to plan accessible trips and or outings. It is in the form of an App which will give information gathered on user experience regarding access to, and the accessibility of a facility and or service using a Google Maps-style GPS map interface indicating the location of accessible facility or service. The service will rely heavily on users to rate, verify, or add new facilities and or services with the option to add comments. What is different about this tool is that it will be followed up by a service to the client that will assist them in complying with access legislation.

Hi Fadila this looks like a great idea to drive through the campaign because one of the biggest challenges we facing in SA is Accessibility so when you get a chance you can email me on. disabilityconsultant88@gmail.com and we see how we can make this work.
